Michael Savage: No Apologies
Posted by: Zach W in Autism, Family, From the Emailbox, Idiot of the Week, News, Those Kooky Conservatives!, tags: Michael SavageThis past Saturday, I blogged about comments made by Michael Savage on the July 16th edition of his nationally syndicated radio show. During his show, Savage called autism a “fraud, a racket” and proceeded to explain that in 99 percent of the cases, autism is a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out because they have no father around. Now obviously Savage’s comments are ignorant, offensive, and inflammatory on many levels, and as the parent of a child affected by autism, I was more than a little outraged by his comments.
In the Milwaukee area, Michael Savage’s show is syndicated by 620 WTMJ, so I gave Tom Parker, the Program Manager, a call to see if he condoned Savage’s comments. Having not heard back from Mr. Parker, I decided to send an email as well:

Subject: Michael Savage’s Comments on Autism
From: “Zachary W.”
Date: Mon, July 21, 2008 7:26 pm
To: tparker@620wtmj.comDear Mr. Parker:
My name is Zachary W, and I’m writing this email in response to recent comments made by Michael Savage during his radio show, a show your station syndicates. During the July 16th edition of his radio show, Mr. Savage claimed autism is “[a] fraud, a racket. … I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
As the parent of an autistic child, I am deeply offended by Mr. Savage’s statements, and what’s more, I’m disappointed 620 WTMJ would air such inflammatory, ignorant, and insensitive remarks. What’s more, I’m surprised your station has not issued any kind of statement disavowing the comments made by Michael Savage, given the fact that his comments have received national attention - and not in a positive way.
I would greatly appreciate a response from you regarding this situation.
Sincerely,
Zachary W
Savage offered no apology in a message posted today on his Web site. Instead, Savage said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a “national panic” by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person’s ability to communicate. Savage also expressed his opinion that “Our children are being used as profit centers by a greedy, corrupt medical/pharmaceutical establishment,” but sadly enough, he couldn’t bring himself to apologize for his ignorant and uninformed opinion.

I also blogged about Michael [the] Savage

After this was brought to our attention by our friend John Michlig.
I, too, called Mr. Parker. I was able to speak to him, unfortunately. Before I could utter a few words, he asked me if I was a listener of WTMJ radio. Next he asked if I was a listener of Mr. Savages show and if I had heard the actual airing of the show. Since I am not a listener or a fan of Michael Savage, my opinion of this issue did not matter one bit to Mr. Parker. His only concern is of those fans of listeners of the show.
He will not be taking the show off the air…”he didn’t break any law.”
You know, of course we need to preserve our constitutional rights. Savage may use the excuse now that he was trying to educate the American people about disabilities….see, he’s an expert now because he had a brother who was disabled and passed away. So that gives him the right, the authority, the expertise on autism…that makes him the judge and jury. That makes him entitled to take something that causes so much heartache in families and turn it into something shameful. And he even tries to link disabilities with race. And Parker? he didn’t have a clue..he starts talking about ADHD…and that his statement was taken out of context.
I think he picked the wrong disability to mess around with. This guy is a total loser.
Hi !
I found your site thru google. I was looking for an e-mail address for Savage, but couldn’t find it. Just wanted you to know that I agree with you 100%! I have a 14-year old autistic daughter and know many, many other autistic children (her classmates). Those comments made by Savage are so harmful to our children by those unfamiliar with autism believing what he says is true.
I have a site for my daughter (that needs to be updated badly).

Tina, thanks for visiting. It’s good to hear from other parents of autistic children!
Janet, it’s unfortunate that Mr. Parker seems to condone attacking kids with special needs. Apparently it’s just not politically incorrect enough to warrant a statement disavowing the comments.
David Edwards and Muriel Kane of Raw Story wrote a story about this that includes a CNN video.

Kudos for Janet Evans for going the extra mile and actually CALLING WTMJ, thereby exposing the management’s cluelessness.
NOT EVEN A PACKER GAME; WTMJ is officially off my dial for good.
John, I’ve called and sent emails, and I’ve yet to hear a response. Apparently my opinion doesn’t matter, but that’s okay, because like you said, WTMJ is off my dial for good.
Though I disagree with most of Michael Savage’s views on other issues, I TOTALLY agree with his views on Autism!! God Bless You for that, finally someone spoke the truth! I am a mother of 2 children that have been diagnosed with autism… What a joke!! They are nothing but late talkers that are spoiled brats as well… God Bless You man! and parents, PLEASE snap out if it.. stop acting like victims… You’re really pethatic!
If I didn’t know any better, I’d say J.S. is just a troll. Then again, if she’s not, then wouldn’t she be to blame for her kids being “spoiled brats?”
Oh, and by the way, it’s pathetic, not pethatic.
Savage is right! Think about it,I am 42 yers old my generation never had to deal with “auistic” classmates or drugs to make our fellow classmates normal or free from the effects of an “A D D”.They were discribed as hyper or retarded…..thats it.It’s not insensative or mean spirited…it’s reality.Parents ,doctors are not Gods, they are not the last word, how about this word…….uh …lets see……acountability…..Try taking some and your kids can stop taking drugs.
Braddley, my son doesn’t take drugs, nor do many autistic kids.
And what exactly do parents need to take accountability for? I’d love to hear your thoughts on that.
I commend Savage for busting the myth of the “Spectrum” of disorders. It’s just one more example of how we Americans LOVE to be victims of something. Everyone, but especially kids, that doesn’t display predictible behavior is labeled, whether it be ADD, dyslexic, austic, Asperger, etc. Whispers of the (former) richest man in the world being an Asperger were circulated because he “rocked” softly during testimony in his antitrust case. Mediocrity continues to be championed in this country (hell we voted for Bush twice) so any exceptional behavior is worrisome. In the name of control, we label our kids, drug them, what’s next, lock them up? Savage is speaking truth to power, because make no mistake about it, plenty of power is behind all the “Spectrum” diagnoses because there’s BIG MONEY to be made in the treatment of such “disorders.” For once, I send a kudo to you Savage!
It’s good to see so many enlightened folks making their way over here!
I’d encourage you all to do a little reading and perhaps think past what you’re fed by conservative talk radio.
Hey Zach..wake up .The giant phamacutical companys love the parent victims.JUMP TO A CONCLUSION BABY.Free your self from falt, free yourself from guilt. Its the American way
Hey Braddley…learn to read. What part of me saying my son’s not on medication didn’t compute for you?
But hey, you’re entitled to your opinions, however misguided, uninformed, and ignorant they may be.
So wonderful to see parents like myself! Pushing there kids to be where they should be… I feel sorry for the rest of the parents!
Thank you j s ,but its not a suprise to see people like Zach result to name calling when confronted with truth once the guilt of poor parenting in the first years[one through three years] flows off their backs like so much water off a ducks back.ALSO big business doesnt care about your situation or your family. LISTEN TO SAVAGE.I ll bet a million dollars Zach has never heard a word of Savage’s show yet comment is in order for him. God bless him and his son. 10-10
Braddley, I certainly didn’t call you names; I just expressed my opinion, just as you expressed yours.
Judging by their spelling skills, or lack thereof, it is quite understandable why these creatures fail to understand basic anatomy, biology, or medicine.
Or why they would listen to Savage.
dearest capper its not understanedable my friend lol
Hey Braddley, I’ve got a serious question, and I’d like a serious answer, if you’re willing.
Do you consider Tourette’s to be a “made up” disorder, or do you consider it to be a valid diagnosis?
What about Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder? Do you consider those to be valid diagnoses?
As the great Ronald Reagan said …. “There you go again”. Word to ya capper,I’M NO CREATURE..You libs are all the same … name calling is not very pretty but it is petty …did I sprll that rite
Tourett’s…yes.Schzo….yes.Bipolar no O.C.D.yes..and your point?
My point is that they’re all recognized mental health disorders according to the DSM-IV, which is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States. Interestingly enough, autism and related spectrum disorders are also listed in the DSM-IV.
When you put Bipolar Disorder in that group of serious mental disorders ……I’m sorry, but you and the DSM-IV loose credibility with me.Lets go ahead and throw “the blues” in there as well and lets start an ad campaign like the drug companies did for “male enhancment”…..reMEMBER those ads ?
Braddley, here’s some light reading for you regarding bipolar, since you’re so uninformed.
Ooooh oohhhh…click me!
By the way, comparing bipolar disorder to “the blues” is like comparing apples to bananas, but I wouldn’t expect you to understand something that complicated.
I’m beginning to get tired of your personal attacks.I’m getting “the blues” Besides…Savage Nation is about to come on my local station here in Atlanta …..and the truth shall come to the Heart The South.I WILL STILL PRAY FOR YOU AND YOUR KIND you need all the help you can get IM GONE
HOW BOUT THIS allsup.com/apply/bipolar-disorder then pay your taxes like a good little lib
When are you liberals going to put down the pot pipe and wake up? Stop pumping your kids full of Ritalin.
Micheal Savage cares about kids unlike you morons. He has written books like “healing children naturally” and you idiots are just out to get him. This guy does all sorts of stuff to help kids, you people are sick for trying to take him down for telling the truth.
Funny thing how it was the liberals who used to hate big companies like the pharmaceutical giants but now they can’t get enough of their drugs to pump into their kids so they don’t have to parent.
It appears that paranoia is sweeping the land of the right, and their fear of being healthy prevents them from accepting help. But then again, that is part of the disease.
Unfortunately, personality disorders cannot be treated as effectively, which again explains some of the comments of the Savage-backers.
I’m just amazed at how uninformed so many of Michael Savage’s supporters really are. They keep talking about pharmaceutical companies and how parents are pumping their autistic kids full of meds, yet the reality (which they don’t seem to have a grasp on) is much different from what they think.
My son’s autistic, and he’s not on one single prescribed medication. Seems to blow a big hole in the assertions by more than one supporter of Michae Savage in this thread that parents are just trying to pump drugs into their kids.
First, I am sorry for my poor spelling, I started learning english only 4 years ago, did not mean to offend anyone with my horrible spelling. Moreover, I think the issue is our kids, diagosed with what some want to believe is a disorder. I personally don’t believe that. My kids got where they are because of being spoiled, and because for some reason, they are late talkers, my sister was though not myself. Did any of you read the truth in what one person wrote yesterday? his name is johnson, please read that too. To all of you who see their kids a little bit different than the “normal” kids, give them a chance before you label them! God Bless our kids

I am so appalled at the lack of education that is out there regarding autism. It’s so crystal clear based on the ignorance of some of these commenters.
To J.S:
“I am a mother of 2 children that have been diagnosed with autism… What a joke!! They are nothing but late talkers that are spoiled brats as well… God Bless You man! and parents, PLEASE snap out if it.. stop acting like victims… You’re really pethatic!”
So, are you taking Savage’s word for it that your children are simply brats? Or have you had them re-evaluated. For your children’s sake, I hope the latter is the case. If they were, and found not to be on the spectrum…that’s fantastic news! I am happy for your family! If not, are you happy with the fact that they will just be “spoiled brats” for the rest of their life, and not get them the therapy that they need to become functional in society? Does it make you feel better that Michael Savage told you it was okay to take the label off your child and just suck it up and deal with it?
I am the mother of a beautiful 5 year old boy who happens to have autism. He was diagnosed at the age of 2. I am also a Registered Nurse, who does not believe in pumping children full of medication. I never once entertained the idea of looking for a “magic pill” that would make my child behave “NORMALLY”, but also as a mother of a neurotypical child as well, I’m sure we can all joke that we wish their was one from time to time. My son’s treatment for his autism consists of intensive in-home applied behavioral therapy 35 hours a week, as well as speech and occupational therapy in conjunction with special education in the early childhood program in our school district. It is a lifelong commitment, and certainly a much more rigorous but healthier path than just “pumping him full of medication”. When times were really difficult, I wished I could have simply blamed it on him being a spoiled brat. But it’s not that simple.
One more thing…my husband and I are not victims. My son is not a victim. He is our son, who happens to be autistic. His autism is not what makes him Nicholas. Nicholas is what makes him Nicholas. His autism has showed us a different view of the world around us. Of course I wish he never had it, but I can’t imagine our life without having this a part of it.
For people who pride themselves on their intelligence, it’s sad to see so much ignorance. J.S. please do your children a favor and seek a second opinion, as much as it might pain you to do so, if you haven’t already. If you’ve stopped treatment, or seeking treatment, because you hope your children are simply just “late talkers” and “spoiled brats” you are only decreasing their chances of a recovery. And for the record, when I refer to treatment, I’m referring to therapy, not medication.
To Braddley, behind the atrocious spelling I got wind of your ignorance as well. Maybe “back in your day” there was hardly anything known about autism, and if there had been, those people you choose to label “mentally retarded” might be very functional, contributing members of society today. My son will never be “locked up”, as you predict might be next. Why? Because he is getting treatment.
As far as there being “big money” to be made from Autism..that is an extremely weak argument. Sure, the therapy costs money..the medication costs money, etc. etc. So, is giving someone the diagnosis of cancer or heart disease all just a ploy to make the pharmaceutical companies richer? Do you believe that a bunch of suits sitting around a conference table in their 32nd story office building pulled an all-nighter brainstorming diagnoses that they could slap on children because “OH EM GEE THERES BIG MONEY TO BE HAD HERE PEOPLE!?!?!?”.
How shallow and ignorant.
