Feds expanding investigation into Norm Coleman

At the end of last year, I predicted former Minnesota Senator Norm Coleman would be implicated and convicted of public misconduct before Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. At the time, that prediction seemed like a stretch, considering federal authorities had only begun investigating some shady financial dealings involving a close Coleman associate, but given the news the FBI has expanded its inquiry into Norm Coleman’s finances, I may not have been that far off base:

FBI agents in Minnesota have begun asking questions about the relationship between former U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman and a close friend and donor, according to a Minnesota source to whom the agents talked.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the “main topic” of the two agents’ questions surrounded an allegation that Bloomington financier Nasser Kazeminy paid for suits and other items Coleman and his wife shopped for at Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis.

This expanded investigation and any criminal behavior that might be uncovered as a result of the investigation will only serve to be yet another black eye for the Republican Party, given how closely Norm Coleman and the Republican Party have worked to to prevent Al Franken from being seated as Minnesota’s next United States Senator. If the GOP were smart, the revelation of an expanded FBI investigation would result in the GOP putting some distance between themselves and Norm Coleman, because I’ve got a feeling that Norm Coleman’s going to end up a convicted felon before the year is over. After all, where there’s smoke there’s usually fire.

  1. “…Norm Coleman and the Republican Party have worked to to prevent Al Franken from being seated….”

More petty spin. How sad 🙁

It sure seems to me that what you call working hard to prevent Al Franken from being seated, is in all reality merely the best Justice system in the world taking its course. Are you really anti-justice? Or just accidentally so?

  2. “The best justice system in the world taking its course.”

And if the shoe were on the other foot and it was Franken fighting in the courts, would you really be saying the same thing? The fact is, Sen. Coleman had his day in court as part of Minnesota’s election appeals process and he lost, and instead of accepting that decision, he’s continued to drag this process out. If you think this situation has nothing to do with the GOP’s desire to avoid a 60 seat majority in the Senate, then you’re the one spinning.

And what about Coleman’s possible criminal behavior? Any comment on that? Here’s some great information on Senator Coleman’s shady dealings, in case you’re interested in doing some reading.

  3. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and take that deflection as an “accidentally so”.

Yes, I’d really be saying the same thing about justice taking it’s course just like I did when Al Gore had his election in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Yes, if guilty… Sen Coleman desrves to go striaght to Federal Men’s Warehouse Suit jail…do not pass go.

  4. There are two other things the FBI might eventually investigate.

His sweetheart apartment deal far below market rates from a fellow Republican activist.
His landlord’s company paid his utility bills for his first year of residence. This is illegal. We’ve still never seen the utility bills.

We’re tracking all of this at MN Progressive Project.

  5. Yeah just like Alaskan Senator Stevens… oh wait, he was EXONERATED. After it was too late of course.
