Memorial Day tidbits

  • I’ve written a little bit about about the sexism of some on the right, but I’m heartened to see there’s at least one Republican lawmaker who doesn’t think it’s OK to compare Nancy Pelosi to Pussy Galore. In a statement to POLITICO on Saturday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah called the GOP’s web video “reprehensible:”

“I thought it was reprehensible, irresponsible and unpersuasive. If we’re going to regain the credibility of the American people, we’re going to have to stop with silly antics like that. It may get a snide chuckle inside the Beltway, but it offends most people. We have to get away from the politics of personal destruction,” he said of the video.

Rep. Chaffetz went on to say he believed the Republican Party could point out inconsistencies in Speaker Pelosi’s explanations regarding what she knew about the use of “enhanced interrogation” techniques by our nation without resorting to “stunts.”

  • A little closer to home, Milwaukee County Board Chairman Lee Holloway is taking credit for the county’s sale of 89 acres of the Milwaukee County Grounds to UWM for the university’s engineering campus. It’s amusing to see Scott Walker and Lee Holloway fighting to take credit for selling off one of Milwaukee County’s most beautiful locations, but it’s even more amusing to see Scott Walker taking credit for breaking a campaign promise:

Oppose development of northeast quadrant of County Grounds for anything other than state forest.

Then again, as I look at the list of Walker’s campaign promises, I see more than a few that he’s broken, and hopefully he’ll be asked about those broken promises now that he’s seeking higher office. After all, Wisconsin’s voters deserve to know why Scott Walker can’t keep a promise.

  1. Much quicker (and easier on my lazy, lazy fingers!) to count the promises in that list which he HAS kept. Nobody could have predicted a CRG-based platform would be so full of b.s.

  2. Yeah, as I read the promises Walker made, I’m struck by how many of them he hasn’t kept, because it’s such a small number in comparison to the promises he kept.

  3. Did the RNC actually use the caption “Pelosi as Pussy Galore” on the video or was that added later by someone else?

  4. They didn’t actually use the caption; I think that was added, but it’s the comparison that’s most bothersome.
