Feingold’s statement honoring veterans
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold issued a statement today honoring veterans:
“Today, I join all Wisconsinites in honoring our veterans. I also extend my deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those service members whose lives were tragically taken at Fort Hood Army base. I am particularly saddened by the loss of two Wisconsin service members. And my thoughts are also with those injured in this terrible attack, including four Wisconsinites. As the nation grieves, we thank all our brave service members who so selflessly serve our country. Their courageous service and profound sacrifice on behalf of our nation are the true definition of heroism.
“This year, Wisconsin has seen a number of important developments that will help serve our state’s veterans, including the opening of a new Vet Center in Brown County. When the La Crosse center opens next year, roughly 82 percent of Wisconsin’s veterans will be within an hour’s drive of one of these care facilities. Vet centers are critical to helping our service members with the sometimes difficult transition to civilian life. I was proud to work with Wisconsin veterans to help ensure these new Wisconsin centers were established, and it is great news that most of our state’s veterans will no longer have to drive long distances to receive essential care.
“In addition, I was pleased to support recent legislation that the president signed into law to ensure funding for the VA is provided on a timely basis. This is an important step to make sure our veterans receive the support they have earned through their outstanding service to our country.
“I applaud the veterans community for their leadership on this and so many other issues. Our veterans show such dedication to this country in everything they do. They are a shining example of service and patriotism, and November 11 is a day to celebrate the example that they set for every American. Today, we humbly come together to thank our veterans and rededicate ourselves to ensuring that their service to our country is never forgotten.”
