Wisconsin’s a terrible place to do business!

The corporate parent of Midwest Airlines plans to add up to 800 jobs over the next year in Milwaukee and Oak Creek, including 400 positions that are being consolidated from outside Wisconsin, rebuilding Midwest’s hub at Mitchell International Airport and doubling the local workforce.

Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings Inc. will shift around 400 positions to Mitchell International and Midwest’s Oak Creek offices from Las Cruces, N.M., and Denver, said Chief Executive Officer Bryan Bedford said Tuesday.

Someone ought to tell Republic Airlines Wisconsin is a terrible place to do business, and while they’re at it, they ought to tell Alice.com Wisconsin is a terrible state to get a start-up off the ground.

Certainly great news, but here’s the key:

“Republic is shifting the Denver jobs to Milwaukee partly because of higher taxes the company was facing in Colorado for its maintenance hub there, Bedford said. Republic could receive up to $27 million in Wisconsin tax credits through 2021 if it follows its plans to maintain and create jobs.”

In otherwords, if you cut taxes on businesses will come. But isn’t that what the Republican’s have argued?

Perhaps if we cut our tax rates and tax less than other states more businesses will come?

Glad to hear some good jobs news that supports the state as a good one for business. In other good job news, the VA will be adding 220 jobs in the Madison area as part of its consolidation of billing and collection units from around the Midwest. As the article says “The new facility is expected to open in the late summer or fall of 2010 and will consolidate offices in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.”

This job expansion has nothing to do with cutting taxes.

Oh noes! Don’t tell me that, right when I was thinking of starting a business! I mean, we’ve already bought a house in the dreaded City of Milwaukee. What a fool I am for even thinking of starting a business here!
