Feingold named “Legislator of the Year”

As reported by the Superior Telegram, the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers plans to name U.S. Senator Russ Feingold its “Legislator of the Year” for his contributions to veterans issues. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, July 11 prior to Sen. Feingold’s Ashland County listening session in Ashland. The listening session starts at 11:00 a.m. at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. Here’s more on Sen. Feingold’s efforts on behalf of veterans:

Among the efforts that led to the award was Feingold’s success in including a provision in the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010 to provide grants to state and local governmental entities to conduct outreach to veterans and help them obtain the care and benefits to which they are entitled.

The provision was based on a Feingold bill to award grants to groups with expertise in veterans’ matters that already have a presence in local communities, especially in rural areas where the VA may not have a presence. The outreach assistance was a priority for the NACVSO.

Throughout his tenure in the United States Senate, Sen. Feingold has been a staunch supporter of our nation’s veterans, including thousands of veterans here in Wisconsin. In 2007, Sen. Feingold successfully pushed the VA to establish new VA clinics in Hayward and Rice Lake, and he also authored the Veterans Enhanced Services Transition (VETS) Act, which would strengthen and improve transition services for military personnel who are returning to civilian life.
