Ron Johnson: homeless vets are just “details”

In a recent interview, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ron Johnson was asked to articulate what he felt was the Department of Veteran’s Affairs’ responsibility is to homeless veterans. Predictably – and unfortunately – Johnson stated that his election fight against Sen. Russ Feingold is not “about details,” as if homeless veterans are just unimportant “details” that aren’t important enough to be discussed during the election (emphasis mine):

The moderator pressed Johnson — a government skeptic — to explain exactly how the government should respond to the issue of homeless vets. “Are there specific things that you think need to happen within that galaxy of services, perhaps, that the VA has some responsibility for or other organizations that would help homeless veterans?”

Johnson responded, flummoxed.

“Specifically I can’t really — I haven’t been there, I don’t have all the details. One thing I will point out: I don’t believe this election really is about details. It just isn’t.”

While Ron Johnson considers veterans – whether homeless or otherwise – to be “details” that aren’t important enough to be discussed in detail during this election, Sen. Russ Feingold has made it clear veterans here in Wisconsin and across the nation are one of his highest priorities. Here’s Sen. Feingold’s latest TV ad highlighting his support for veterans:

I think it’s safe to say there’s only one candidate for U.S. Senate here in Wisconsin who wants to talk about how he’s going to help veterans as Wisconsin’s United States Senator, and that candidate is Senator Russ Feingold.
