No she didnt ….

I am not ready to give a full overview of the election results and what they mean etc… I have to let it all sink in first. However something in the post coverage caught my eye this morning that I needed to address.

In one of the most high profile races in the country, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defeated Sharron Angle to hold on to his seat. This from USA Today:

a strong challenge from Tea Party standard-bearer Sharron Angle in a race that rattled the political hierarchies and left voters here wrung out.

I take exception to that. In no possible stretch of the imagination was Sharron Angle ever a credible strong challenger. She has a history of Gaffes that alone should be enough to end her political career and in totality are unexplainable. Just a few of the highlights are: Threatening to sue Harry Reid for posting her own views, to calling for the American people to take up arms against the government, to her wanting to eliminate social security and medicare, to Shilling for BP during the oil spill, her talking exclusively to fox, to actually using a body double to avoid local reporters questions, to telling a bunch of hispanic school kids – \" you look asian to me\". The list goes on. Given a choice between having one of the most powerful legislators represent you or this person, the voters almost chose Angle.

So the question is, when we are in such dire straights as a country with such high unemployment, a bleeding of manufacturing jobs, record foreclosures, our education system dwindling, infrastructure crumbling, fighting two wars, a greater disparity between the rich and the poor that we have not seen since the 1920’s, a record deficit and debt, etc… All of these problems and we do not hold our politicians, who actually make the policies that lead us there, to a higher standard than that? I am not defending Harry Reid here, if you want him out get a credible candidate. Why would anyone vote for a candidate who refuses to meet the people and answer reporters questions? Did they read her mind? did they look into her soul and know she is a good person? Do they just want to have a beer with her?

As Benjamin Franklin once said when asked what we just came up with, he answered “It’s a republic ma’am, if you can keep it.”

Heaven Help us!

PS: Sharron Angle herself put an exclamation mark on this story with her concession speech!
