Enlisted and served three years in the USAF during Korean conflict.
Gone, but not forgotten; Uncle Fred in ETO WWII; Uncle Will in WWII Merchant Marine torpedoed three times; Brother-in-law, Bruce KIA thirty days after arrival in Vietnam; cousin Dick survived a Chinese grenade to face in Korea. Those were different times.
I am grateful for my late father, Edward Heinzelman, who was disabled while fighting with the 11th Armour Div during the Battle of the Bulge. And for the safe return of my son, Eddie Heinzelman, after his tour in Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne.

Wouldn´t Americans – as an alternative to the constant wars – be better served by honoring the efforts for global peace and justice, when will the US again be a member in good faith serving that great institution that was created after World War II to ensure an end to wars – The United Nations?
“honoring all those …. who’ve served and sacrificed for our country, and I’m damn proud ….. ” – are you sure they served “our country”, not certain moneyed interests and the military-industrial-academic-entertainment complex? Fredrik, I appreciate your concerns about who are veterans really served, but that’s a discussion for another day.
If you’d please, I’d like to honor my grandfather’s 40 years of service and sacrifice.
Yes, please honor him, but … a discussion for another day? I think you shall remember and honour your grandfather, absolutely, but the best way to do it is by ensuring the day to reinforce and remember that the tradition of violence that he was part of shall have to stop – before it is full stop for humanity.
