Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay President

Is Chick-fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy a bigot? To borrow his own words, “Guilty as charged.”

Speaking on the Ken Coleman radio show a few weeks back, Cathy had this to say about marriage equality for same-sex partners (and single women):

“I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about”

In response to Don Cathy’s anti-gay statements, the Jim Henson Company announced it would end its partnership with Chick-fil-A, pulling all its Creature Shop toys from Chick-fil-A kids meals.

And if you happen to be a fan of Chick-fil-A’s sandwiches – as Austin, Texas-based singer/actor/comedian/YouTube chef Hilah Johnson is – you can make yourself a “Chick-fil-Gay” sandwich using her recipe.

  1. The Henson organization would have been less destructive if they had thrown bricks. People have a right to voice their opinion about what marriage means to them. And for thousands of years it meant vows between a man and a woman. There is no harm meant by voicing concern with the current redefinition. In fact, it was, in my opinion meant to allay harm, since marriage has been traditionally defined as sacred, whereas currently it seems to be mearly a self gratifying status symbol.

    1. Marriage isn’t just a self gratifying status symbol. It’s has financial implications including tax benefits and, in Wisconsin and a few other states, common property laws apply.

    2. I couldn’t disagree with you more regarding your statement that marriage seems to be merely a “self gratifying status symbol.”

I absolutely did not enter into my marriage with my wife to gain some sort of status; we married each other because we wanted to spend our lives together, and marriage was how we chose to signify that bond. While it’s true far too many marriages nowadays end in divorce, many more last.

Ultimately, this issue boils down to equality. We were a nation founded on the principle of equality for all citizens, and I believe that should apply to same-sex couples that want to be able to marry as a means of cementing their bond.

      1. Still waiting for you hypocrites to stand behind polygamy and anything else anyone else wants officially sanctioned and recognized by the government. If you say equality for all citizens, that means anything goes. If you believe it should apply to same-sex couples, have the courage to say it applies to everyone else too.

  2. And if we take the Bible literally, did Adam and Eve concieve out of wedlock? Where did the women who provided their sons with partners come from? And aren’t we all actually directly descended from Noah’s family since they are the only humans to survive the great flood? I mean if it’s literal…

  3. @Cat Kin Certainly people have a right to voice their own beliefs. But, and this is very key, when you voice your opinions others are perfectly within their rights to respond to those beliefs. If they want to pull their sponsorship, stop buying your product, heck even protest your business that is well within their rights, and is absolutely not an infringement on anyone’s freedom of speech.

  4. All the financial implications and tax issues on personal partnerships can easily be addressed and are so in legal documents. Some people believe that the inconceiveable chance that life continues to be sustained is God ordained. I happen to think people are free in this country to voice that belief as well as concern for actions which degrade that faith. In fact, the advantage that Chick Fil-A has in the market place may be due to that sort of faith in behalf of the company and employees.

    1. Cat, you lost that argument when marriage was codified into civil law. As such, it is therefore subject to the provisions of the United States Constitution. Any attempt to define it as other than secular is prohibited under the First Amendment. Period.

      1. Rich, the constitution no longer applies. See: religious freedom, lack therof, under Obamacare.

  5. Unfortunately, “Chick-Fail-a” has been caught in MORE lies. It put up a fake Facebook account using a stock photo of a teenager and a very obvious corporate voice. It has since been taken down. Somehow I don’t see the continued lying (Facebook, “safety issues”) and judement of others as being in sync with their so called religious values.

    Their actions speak volumes.

  6. Rich, I disagree!…also pursuant to the first Amendment. CJ McD, what lies as in “more lies?” Where does moral law say we must bow to how facebook wants to gather personal and private information?

    1. “I disagree!…also pursuant to the first Amendment”

Ok, I’ll bite. Please enlighten me on how the Establishment Clause permits systematic discrimination on the basis on religious affiliation.

      The floor is yours.

  7. CatKin- What lies as in “more lies”? Not sure of your info sources, but THIS is ALL OVER the news.: http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterhimler/2012/07/25/chick-filleted-on-facebook/

I can link to more if you’d like.

As for your question: “Where does moral law say we must bow to how facebook wants to gather personal and private information?” “Pursuant to the First Amendment”? If Chick-Fail-A doesn’t like FB data gathering, it had the option to abstain from using it as a forum for it’s misrepresentative propaganda.

Not sure what “moral” law you speak of, but in my world a lie is a lie is a lie. If you’re talking about the ten commandments, that would be moral law #9.

Does anyone else want to take over for the current “Cat Kin”? Looks like they are losing ground………

  9. Now you are throwing bricks, CJ McD. I’m only standing up for someone’s rights to voice an opinion on faith. And you want me to sit in the back of the bus and shut up. Who’s the bigot? If people want to wear a disguise to prevent your bricks from damaging their home or loved ones…and words can do that, then that is their right, whether on facebook or blogging blue. I prefer to look at a company on the merits of their product, how it’s produced and presented and not on the religious feelings of it’s administration.

  10. Cat Kin-
Bricks you say? My, I’ll try to be a bit gentler to your sensitivities. You did ask me to clarify my “lies” comment.

As far as having gravatar identites, that’s not a huge issue either. It’s Chick-Fil-A’s misrepresenting with a false identity that flies in the face of their so-called higher moral ground.
You have every right to stand up for what you believe. Have at it darlin. I certainly don’t want you to shut up and sit in the back of a bus. I’d just like you to answer my question.

Can you be a bigot AND a christian? Cuz Mr. Cathy claims to be both.

    Have a great night!

  11. Aren’t you the same people who thought it was ridiculous to boycott Oreo cookies a couple of weeks ago? Now it’s ok to boycott when it’s something you disagree with, and also get government involved in taking sides (Rahm Emanuel).

So Don Cathy has an opinion. Are the restaurants discriminating in hiring or serving anyone? Heck, if I boycotted people who I disagreed with I would never see another movie, TV show, or buy music ever again, among many other products and services.

    1. Look up the definition of the word “conflation” and you’ll see a picture of FMSN.

      1. It’s only conflation if its a superficial distinction. Care to support your claim with by distinguishing his Oreo cookie example or are we just throwing out 10 cent words?
