Republican Rep. Gohmert doubles down on anti-Muslim witchhunt

Apparently Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas really really wants to be this generation’s Joe McCarthy.

Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert doubled down on warnings of Muslim Brotherhood influence in America Thursday while taking a shot at the media for not investigating his claims further.

The Republican suggested reporters were more interested in attacking him than assessing the merits of five letters Gohmert and four GOP colleagues – including Rep. Michele Bachmann — wrote in June. The letters ask federal inspectors general to look at U.S. officials with alleged ties to the Muslim organization — most notably State Department Deputy Chief of Staff Huma Abedin.

It seems pretty clear the likes of Louie Gohmert and Michele Bachmann – both of whom are fond of citing the Constitution – aren’t big fans of the religious tolerance enshrined within that document.

Bigotry is nasty business, and there’s a lot of nasty folks in the Republican Party right now.

  1. I’ve been to Gohmert’s district in Texas. Folks, you have to see it to believe it. Down there, Louie is just another normal guy.

  2. Gohmert is odious. His comments immediately following the tragedy in Aurora were frightening. He lamented secular society and claimed the shooting was a direct result of “attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs” and evidenced the withdrawal of God’s “protective hand” from America. When his egregiously inappropriate nutbagginess was rightly criticized, he tried to wail about how his comments were taken out of context. He’s dangerously fanatical and an Anti-Constitutional Tea Party toady.

Referring to McCain as “numbnuts” illustrates how ignoble and servile he is. Gohmert is no responsible statesman. He’s minacious. He’s claimed neither McCain nor the “mainstream media” have actually read the officious report he co-sponsored. Trouble is, of course they have, and found it grossly lacking in substance. Investigations are in order, that’s so. Those who should be investigated are religious extremists like Gohmert and Bachmann who are infiltrating our government. The source for their report should be thoroughly investigated as well. Gohmert and Bachmann are cut from the same cloth – both express the attitude that they are not responsible for what they say and do when their extremism runs afoul of common decency.

Then there’s Phoenix Tea Party Extremist Wes Harris, who sent this message to John McCain after the senator spoke out against the McCarthyist attack: “Go to hell, Senator, it’s time for you to take your final dirt nap.” Apparently, a warning that Wes will work toward challenging McCain’s senate seat. Ain’t political warfare perty?
