Suspect in Family Research Council shooting charged

I hope they throw the book at him…

The Virginia man accused of shooting a security guard at the headquarters of a conservative lobbying group after saying, “I don’t like your policies” carried a backpack that contained extra bullets and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, authorities said Thursday.

Floyd Lee Corkins, 28, was charged in federal court a day after police said he walked into the lobby of the Family Research Council building in Washington and shot the guard in the arm.

Corkins was charged with transporting firearms and ammunition across state lines and assault with the intent to kill while armed. The transportation charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years; the assault charge, 30 years.

The worry I have – and I know I’m not alone – is that these kinds of shootings/attacks are going to become even more common than they already are, given how polarized our country has become and how casually violent rhetoric is used to attack the “other side” of the political spectrum.

  1. A question for all of my gun totin’ friends: “Corkins was charged with transporting firearms and ammunition across state lines…”

When hunting in other states for instance or any number of other reasons…don’t you transport firearms and ammo across state lines. What specifically is he actually being charged with?

  2. Guns are illegal in DC, I believe. Everyone in the Virginia, Maryland, DC area knows that.
