An election eve message for Waukesha County Democratic candidates

Jeff Christensen, the Democratic Chair of Wisconsin’s Fifth Congressional District, has written a thoughtful and inspiring election eve message for Waukesha County Democratic candidates and volunteers. Here it is, reprinted in its entirety, with permission (links added):

Sometimes it is easy to be cynical here in the Fifth Congressional District, as it’s the “roughest” of our eight Congressional Districts in Wisconsin for fellow Democrats.

We’re all told how rough it is.  The demographics can be tough.  The lines are often drawn against us.  And there are times when even our neighbors think we’re a little crazy.  And yet we fight.

And most importantly you step up.  You volunteer, you donate and more & more of you decide to run for office.  You make sure that our democracy has a choice here in the 5th District.

As I think about Election Day, I’m hopeful.  Even more so, I’m proud of those who stepped up.

One of the funnier & ethical guys around named Dave Heaster made sure that Jim Sensenbrenner didn’t go unopposed.

A wonderful person named Jesse Read wanted to make sure that Waukesha County would have a new county clerk.

Two educators named Jim Ward & Tanya Lohr decided that their representatives in the State Senate, Mary Lazich & Glenn Grothman, opposed their values; so they challenged them.  Then Beth Lueck, another educator, decided that her State Senator, Alberta Darling, should see a write-in challenger on the ballot.

On the State Assembly side we have an amazing 20 districts in our CD.  And yet, we have 17 candidates on tomorrow’s ballot.  What an amazing group of people from all walks of life who have stood up.

Those 17 people wanted to make sure that you had a choice.  Chris Rockwood & John Pokrandt from Wauwatosa made sure.  Cindy Moore from New Berlin made sure.  My friend Shan Haqqi made sure.  Scott Woods & Perry Duman stepped up again.  Mary Arnold and Horicon Mayor Jim Grigg made sure.  Jim Brownlow and Kathy Wied-Vincent made sure.  And right in the heart of Waukesha, Marga Krumins, Eric Prudent and Tom Hibbard made sure.  And the most transparent guy I know in Andy Jorgensen is at it again to make sure your voice is heard in Madison.

I couldn’t be prouder that all of them stood up and decided to embody the face of democracy.  I hope voters feel the same way tomorrow and show their appreciation by voting for them.

Years ago when I moved to Waukesha County I got involved because there weren’t enough Democrats on the ballot.  In future years I hope people get involved because they are inspired by the Democrats on the ballot.

As a Waukesha County Democrat, I, too, am proud of all of our candidates and of those who stepped up. I’m also proud to call many of them friends, and I wish them the best of luck in tomorrow’s election.

Go, Waukesha County Democrats, go!

  1. Thanks for your great message to those candidates who stepped up to challenge the perpetual “in’s”. All put so much effort against huge odds. I add a big pat on the back to your plaudits. We need to keep this up, today becomes tomorrow and the future challenges.
