While I certainly applaud Brendon Ayanbadejo for his support for equality and tolerance, it certainly seems like the NFL has a long way to go when it comes to tolerance, given the anti-gay comments made by Chris Culliver of the San Francisco 49ers during the week before Superbowl XLVII.

  1. If a player is exceptional, can be bought at a fair price, and won’t scare other exceptional players away, management doesn’t care a fig about the sexual preference…on any team. The “49” mantra, however, needs a little PR and this is ALL that Culliver is doing.

  2. @Cat. So if it’s that simple (that all that matters is talent), then the $64,000 question is, why don’t the owners just come out and say that? The fact that they haven’t about sums it up.

    1. To sort of answer my own post, it should be noted that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has a major presence in every locker room in all of professional sports. The pressure on a gay athlete to stay in the closet must be enormous. I will posit that it is the main reason why we haven’t seen any current athletes come out, and we probably won’t for some time.

  3. @Rich, the less said about sex, hetero or homo, in the locker room the better. I see no reason for “coming out.” That way everyone’s views are respected. This is still a democratic republic, at least so far.
