GOP Congressman announces opposition to abortion because fetuses masturbate in the womb and can therefore feel pain

Wait….he said what?!?!?

Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas, said Monday he is opposed to abortion because fetuses masturbate in the womb, and so can feel both pleasure and pain.

“Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful,” said Burgess, citing his experience as an OB/GYN, during a House Rules Committee hearing on a GOP bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. “They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to think that they could feel pain?”

It’s worth noting that there is absolutely no data to suggest that fetuses feel pleasure or pain while in utero, but when have Republicans ever let facts get in the way of a talking point?

  1. And did you notice Marsha Blackburn’s comments on the bill in question — the bill that would ban abortion after 22 weeks? She insists that restricting abortion = limiting rapists. Classic Conservative-Libertarian Anti-Logic.

Note how she tries to instantiate scientific grounds. But, to put it kindly, she’s lying. The medical profession does not concur. Note her next attempt at unsubstantiated instantiation – that “80% of American women support her bill…” when, in fact, as Benen points out “there is no poll that supports this argument.”

    Familiar pattern we’ve seen recently?
