Scott Walker pulls board of regents nomination for student who signed recall petition

Welcome to Scott Walker’s Wisconsin, where hyper-partisanship trumps all…

A University of Wisconsin-Platteville engineering student anticipating a new seat on the UW System’s Board of Regents was renounced at the eleventh hour by Gov. Scott Walker, who withdrew the young man’s appointment after finding out he had signed a petition as an 18-year-old freshman calling for the governor’s recall.

Joshua Inglett, who finished his sophomore year last month, said an aide to Walker asked him Wednesday evening whether he had signed the recall petition. He told him he had, and within hours another Walker aide left him a voice mail that made it clear to Inglett he wouldn’t get the position.

Inglett said he’d spent months trying to get the two-year appointment and was frustrated that his signing the petition sank it at the last moment. What bothered him more was that he felt he was being portrayed as someone who wasn’t forthcoming when he said he had answered everything he was asked.

It’s worth noting that Scott Walker (or anyone in his administration) has refused to give a concrete reason as to why Inglett’s nomination was withdrawn, but I suppose that’s because Walker doesn’t want to admit that he’s a small, petty, hyper-partisan man who simply can’t tolerate any opinions that dissent from his own.

  1. Let’s call this out for what it is. Hyper-partisanship doesn’t quite cut it. Scott Walker is, and always has been, actively engaging in political warfare and Scott Walker has, and always has been, creating an environment of political intimidation.

    1. And if Obama accidentally nominated a Supreme Court justice who was discovered to lean conservative you are telling me that the nomination wouldn’t be pulled?

      1. And if Obama accidentally nominated a Supreme Court justice who was discovered to lean conservative you are telling me that the nomination wouldn’t be pulled?

Forgot, that’s a ridiculous question for several reasons, foremost being that you are asking an opinion on a speculation. I’m not sure you will understand, but I have to say you do represent the kind of Wisconsin Republicans we have to persuade, and thus have some use on this board.

      2. And if Obama accidentally nominated a Supreme Court justice who was discovered to lean conservative you are telling me that the nomination wouldn’t be pulled?

Obama wouldn’t do that because unlike the Wisconsin Republican Party which is run by a bunch of reactionary idiots who can’t speak in public without causing controversy because they never actually interact with normal people in real life on a day to day basis, have basic social skills, can’t think things through except what they get right now, and can’t even take the time to look through the bills their passing?

He does a throughout background check and does a lot research of their political history.

I don’t like the way Obama is running this country, but seriously actually think through your arguments.

  2. Scott Walker is a dangerous egotistical dictator, and should be forcefully removed from his position. Disgusting excuse for a human being much less a “leader”. Political bully!!

  3. This has been getting some play at Talking Points Memo and Think Progress, so a little national coverage might be coming Scott’s way on this.

  4. Now this information did hit the front page in Eau Claire today. Maybe the corporate drones like the idea of more intimidation. Certainly fair play is far down the list. #MoveToAmend.org

  5. I agree that Governor Walker is being just a wee bit petty here…but he has the right to select and retract anyone he wants and he has done so…the young man exercised his state constitution right…and should have the job based on his overall fitness for the job……it is petty…but if this was part of the criteria for the job it is also a clear indication that neither the governor nor his staff know how to vet potential appointees.

    1. Ed- The real story to me is not that Scotty changed his mind on this for partisan, petty reasons (though that’s sickening enough). Instead, it shows just how incompetent the people he hires are. If signing a recall petition is a deal-breaker, then why isn’t Walkers staff taking 30 minutes to vet this and figure it out?

The obvious answer is that Walker only hires idiotic lackeys and GOP hacks, and values that over being able to do a good job. Which explains why the Numver 2 guy at WEDC is a 30-year-old lifetime GOP politi-hack with no real-world job experience. And it explains why no self-respecting company will come to this state with this clown show in charge of it.

      1. my point exactly: “…but if this was part of the criteria for the job it is also a clear indication that neither the governor nor his staff know how to vet potential appointees. “

  6. This was very disturbing but I think this brings up a much bigger issue. The governor is the chief executive of the State. The top boss. So the petition database and similar things could be used against people in hiring for State jobs, promotions etc. Suppose you a middle manager hired someone and they got in the spotlight somehow and then immediately the recall petition databases would be checked. What if your hire had signed it? That might be the end of _your_ job. So why not just not hire people who signed it?

Farfetched? I wouldn’t count on it.
It is supposed to be a right to petition the government:

But if exercising your right to petition the government means you will never get a job as long as you live and the conservatives are in power, that is not much of a right!

  7. Don’t worry, hc we can always move to Hong Kong…wait…we’d need a passport. We shouldn’t worry too much, however, I can promise you that NSA, the FBI and the CIA are rank amateurs compared to the JDL. #Karkoc
