92,000 Wisconsinites to lose health care coverage thanks to Scott Walker

Scoring political points on the backs of the poor?

One word: Disgusting.

Gov. Scott Walker’s administration is notifying 92,000 Wisconsin residents this month that their health insurance through BadgerCare Plus will end this year, requiring them to buy a subsidized but potentially more costly commercial health plan through the federal marketplace being set up under the Affordable Care Act.

More than 50,000 of the 92,000 people probably would have been moved from BadgerCare Plus to commercial health plans even if Wisconsin had fully endorsed the Affordable Care Act.

  1. ” More than 50,000 of the 92,000 people probably would have been moved from BadgerCare Plus to commercial health plans even if Wisconsin had fully endorsed the Affordable Care Act. ”

This leaves the impression that it’s the ACA that would have moved 50,000 people from Badgercare to private plans. Not true. States have discretion to determine their own Medicaid eligibility, which is why Tommy Thompson went ahead and set the bar at 200% of the federal poverty line for parents of minor children, believing that children need healthy parents. It’s Walker and the republican legislature who decided to kick ALL of these people off of Badgercare.

Jason Stein should correct this in his MJS story.

  2. A lot of people are going to have to pay extra because of this, but at least the exchanges will be available. By not accepting the additional Medicaid money Wisconsin will be losing out on additional doctors and nurses compared to our neighboring states further weakening our economy.
