MSNBC host makes fun of Mitt Romney’s African-American grandson

I can’t believe anyone thought this would be a good idea…

MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry concluded the “What’s So Funny About 2013?” segment of her Sunday show with a chorus of laughter at the black grandson pictured in former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s family Christmas photo. The chuckles were directed at baby Kieran – who was adopted by Romney’s son Ben and his wife Andelynne in September.

“One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” panelist Pia Glenn offered as a caption for the photo, which the Romneys tweeted on Christmas Eve. (Lyrics of the original Sesame Street song are, “One of these things just doesn’t belong.”)

“And that little baby, front and center, would be the one,” Glenn said.

Comedian Dean Obeidallah joked that the baby is a token.

“It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party and the RNC, where they have the whole convention and they find the one black person.”

I’m not sure how anyone at MSNBC thought poking fun at the fact that Mitt Romney has an African-American grandson would be funny, but it’s not – it’s just idiotic and unfunny.

  1. Of all the things you can rip Mitt Romney for, and you choose one of the few good things he does? What the hell is wrong with these people?

We have enough righties playing the victimization and “reverse racism” game without having dingbats making dumb statements to gin up the fauxtrage machine. MHP and company should be smarter than that.

  2. I quit watching Melissa Harris Perry when she decided that persecuting Edward Snowden was her personal mission. I think she’s smug and overly enamored of her own intelligence. She’s a professional Obama apologist also, taking it upon herself to attack both Cornel West and Tavis Smiley for their criticism of Obama. She belongs in the administration, not on TV.

  3. I cringed. Never, ever pick on a politician’s children, most especially a baby. I couldn’t believe it when they showed that segment. I have a gorgeous black niece and if someone said that to her, I’d go bonkers on them.

  4. I don’t believe publishing an essay from a convicted murderer will help your cause in any significant way.

In fact, the tale about getting stabbed in prison illustrates a valid argument from gun supporters. The convict that tried to stab him had a weapon that is clearly prohibited to prison inmates. Yet he obtained the weapon and used it despite the many laws and penalties associated with doing so.

What makes you believe that situation would change with any new gun control laws? Sure, you would put further limitations and obstacles in front of people that already follow gun laws, but will do nothing to deter people like your author and those like them. The simple fact is that people that use guns to commit crimes do not care about what laws that they are breaking.

I also question the motivation of the author. I seriously doubt that he is sincere in his thoughts on gun control. A criminal has a vested interest in having as many unarmed victims available as possible. It makes his job so much easier and safer. More likely he is doing it to get a leg up for when he is eligible for parole.

  5. Melissa Harris-Perry may be educated, but as the saying goes – “There’s no fool like an educated one.”
