Greg Sargent: Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional district “a race to watch”

Earlier Steve posted a recap of his interview(s) with Democratic Congressional candidate Kelly Westlund, who’s running to unseat Republican Rep. “Struggling” Sean Duffy in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional district.

Coincidentally enough, Westlund’s candidacy is drawing attention nationally, with Greg Sargent of the Washington Post’s Plum Line blog calling the contest in the 7th Congressional district “a race to watch.”

Here’s a race to watch: Kelly Westlund, the populist Dem candidate against GOP Rep. Sean Duffy of Wisconsin, blasted out an email to the list of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which is organizing for an unemployment extension, touting her own family’s experience in receiving UI. This nugget jumps out:

“I know that when that check comes in, families use it to buy groceries and pay utility bills and put gas in the car. Those dollars get immediately reinvested in our communities.”

Running on Keynesianism! Keep an eye on Wisconsin’s Seventh.

  1. Sean Duffy hosted a meeting of the Hunger Coalition of Marathon County in December. He said, he was “taken aback” by the severity of
the problem, and he had no idea this was such a big issue here. He voted in September to cut 39 million from SNAP (food stamps)
over ten years. There are 33,000 people in his district who use food stamps. It is His JOB to know what the issues are in his district.
Kelly correctly emphasizes that Duffy votes one way in Washington and says the opposite when he is back here in his district.

That’s a great quote Kelley. Did you know that when our tax dollars are squandered on those that refuse to carry their own weight, less taxes go for roads, emergency services, and other essentials? Then we’re told our taxes have to be raised yet again to pay for the infrastructure that should have been paid for by our taxes previously. You’re all about paying “your fair share”, what about carrying “your own weight”? Why is it my job to keep pouring taxes into people that have refused their entire lives to make sacrifices and wise choices in order to be in a sound financial position later in life? Why has my life changed from trying to provide a better life for my family into being forced to care for those that won’t care for themselves? When you insist our taxes are spent to support those that refuse to support themselves, it lowers our quality of life, it doesn’t raise theirs.

    How do you justify this?

  3. blongcore,

Do people like you ever check your facts and figures before you start spewing this stuff? Or maybe you were just born with a misanthropic and splenetic temperament? Your life has changed from trying to provide a better life for your family to being forced to care for others? What the fuck are you talking about? Do you even know? Do you know how much of your taxes goes to social programs? The military? Corporate subsidies? Did you check any of this stuff before you came on here and digitally vomited all over the damn place? Huh? Did you?

Jesus H Christ, if ignorance and sheer stupidity were precious metals we could mine the conservative mindset to enormous profit.
