Mark Belling delves into Cudahy school board race

Local right-wing squawk radio host Mark Belling sure is a piece of work, and I don’t mean that in a good way. Belling, who once referred to a female school board member as a “whore” and also called breastfeeding moms “sows”, took to the airwaves on Monday to discuss the idea of a married couple serving on the same elected body together.

More specifically, Belling wanted to discuss the fact that Crystal Silkwood, one of the candidates for School Board here in Cudahy, is married to Megan O’Keefe, a current School Board member. Having listened to Belling’s piece more than once, the issue seems to be less about the possibility of a married couple serving together on the Cudahy School Board and all about the fact that there’s a possibility a same-sex couple could serve on the Cudahy School Board together.

Listen for yourself.

There’s no doubt in my mind Mark Belling would not have spent 20 minutes of airtime discussing the possibility of a heterosexual married couple serving on the same elected body together, and as I’ve written elsewhere, the voters of Cudahy should be more concerned about electing the best possible candidates to serve on the School Board without regard for who those candidates are married to.

  1. Sometimes people who are so obsessed with the sexuality of same-sex couples and treat same-sex couples with such hostility are acting to cover up their own problems with sexuality. Perhaps Mark Belling should seek help.

  2. I always figured his race horse could ever do better than second as it was so use to looking at a horse’s ***, but having been on several boards with couples or other family members would make me think he may be right if even for the wrong reason.

  3. Belling’s closing remarks belie his motive for spending 20 minutes of time “outing” the relationship between Crystal Silkwood & Megan O’Keefe to all his Neanderthal listeners. Belling said, “This sort of thing isn’t happening on the North Shore…it’s happening in good old fashioned blue collar Cudahy, Catholic and conservative.

I live in Cudahy, and voted for Megan O’Keefe. I also know Crystal Silkwood, and support her candidacy for the School Board. She was a great teacher at Cudahy High School and I have no doubt that she would make an excellent School Board member. I did not know that she & Megan were a same-sex couple.

Since last Saturday, I have had a Silkwood lawn sign on my front yard. Most of my neighbors are devoted listeners to Belling & Sykes. I wonder how long it will be before one of my right wing neighbors stops by to tell me “all about Crystal” and demand that I take down my sign “or it will be taken down for me

In my Cudahy neighborhood, I went through four Recall Walker signs in 2012, before I made a sign so sturdy that the south side Stand With Walker vandals couldn’t get it out of the ground. I didn’t get as much blowback as the guy in Wauwatosa who Belling railed on for having a Recall Walker sign. Belling called on his listeners to show this guy how much they supported Scott Walker. His house was egged, shot at, and he received threatening letters with postmarks from all over the country threatening to kill everyone in his house. The Wauwatosa police made only cursory efforts to find the sources of the threats.

In this case, Belling was very careful to NOT overtly call for actions by his listeners against Silkwood. His final comments at the end, however, “Conservative, Catholic, Cudahy”, make it VERY clear what he wants his listeners to do.

  4. Reading between the lines, I assume that this means Cudahy school board races are city wide and not districted like Milwaukee?

  5. Belling isn’t saying a same sex married couple on the Board is terrible, he’s saying the voters of Cudahy are bigots and mindless rubes he can manipulate at will. Hope the people of Cudahy find this unacceptable and insulting. Republican office holders’ and talking heads’ naked contempt and disgust for their own voters and audiences is breathtaking.
