House #2 Eric Cantor loses Republican primary

I’ll admit it – this brought a smile to my face.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor was defeated Tuesday by a little-known economics professor in Virginia’s Republican primary, a stunning upset and major victory for the tea party.

Cantor is the second-most powerful member of the U.S. House and was seen by some as a possible successor to the House speaker.

His loss to Dave Brat, a political novice with little money marks a huge victory for the tea party movement, which supported Cantor just a few years ago.

Brat had been a thorn in Cantor’s side on the campaign, casting the congressman as a Washington insider who isn’t conservative enough. Last month, a feisty crowd of Brat supporters booed Cantor in front of his family at a local party convention.

His message apparently scored well with voters in the 7th District.

Shortly after learning of Cantor’s loss in the Republican primary for the House seat he currently holds, this ad popped up on Craigslist.

Perhaps the 2014 election cycle will be interesting after all…

  1. I thought Cantor was the conservative extremist. What do we call Brat?

    And is Speaker Boehner next?

      1. While I’m not sorry to see Kantor go, and still see it as a net win, per the 2 Tweets below, imho, it could go the other way.

America should give thanks to Cantor for killing the Grand Bargain, actually.

Wake me when movement progs unseat our own leadership. Mock the tea partiers all you want. They get it done. We don’t.

The optimist in me hopes this loss will help more of the oligarchs figure out that more federal spending, on health care, education, and green infrastructure, will help them hold onto their power. Lower federal taxes on the 99% would be nice too.

The pessimist in me just sees increased fragmentation, greater income inequality, and the kind of violence we saw Sunday in Las Vegas, at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek,…..

  2. Read Charles Pierce today and you may no longer feel the occasion warrants smiling. Brat is another Randian, also extremely religious, and he’s quite clearly prepared to obstruct rather than govern.

  3. More on Brat from Paul Craig Roberts, and notice too, his criticism of “Washington’s influence (interference) using NATO to attempt to steer/control the EU. We are backing the puppets installed by the Obomba/Nuland State Dept, and we are also arming the Nazi-like troops attacking citizens in Eastern Ukraine and it is appearing nowhere in the US news.

On the Ukraine and US attempt at closing Russian gas sales to central and western EU, because US fracked gas and tar sand crude is in need of a market willing to pay higher prices than those present in the US market, currently saturated with surplus supplies. Cathy Stepp OK’ing Enbridge expansion permits http://thepoliticalenvironment.blogspot.com/2014/06/dnr-gives-bad-actor-pipeline-expansion.html is so the US environment is sacrificed to move the petro/gas overseas for greater profit and you and I will be without clean water and without sufficient affordable fuel to survive a winter like we just had.

Obombanation is not about US energy independence, now or any time in the future. Tool-time King to the Oligarchs. Any guesses what Hillary would bring?

Off topic a bit but there is a bigger fish-bowl and WI is connected, people. Getting a bit provincial around here.
