Still Worrying About Throwing The Book At 12 Year Olds?

Last week I posted the argument that 12 year olds are not adults. This was related to two 12 year old girls attempting to stab another 12 year old to death under the delusion they were pleasing a fictional character. And Waukesha County District Brad Schimel (who coincidently is running for Wisconsin Attorney General as a Republican) has decided to charge the girls with first degree attempted homicide as adults.

I was surprised by the number of responses supporting DA Schimel’s decision and the desire to ‘throw the book’ at them. Now today’s paper brings a new head scratcher in the other direction. An adult male who arranged a sex for pay visit with a pregnant woman uses a gun to kill the woman and wound her boyfriend…and he gets? 20 YEARS?

A Milwaukee man who fatally shot a pregnant woman nine times during a paid sexual encounter has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

William Taper III, 24, was charged in August with two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Alexis N. Taylor, 27, and her unborn fetus.

In April, Taper pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide and possessing a gun as a felon. He was sentenced last week by Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner to 15 years for the homicide and five for the gun charge, plus 11 years of extended supervision after his release.

According to the criminal complaint:

Taylor, who was five months pregnant, was desperate for money and after discussion with Taper on a chat line agreed to have sex for $60 at her apartment in the 5200 block of N. 91st St., where her boyfriend could monitor the situation from another room, armed with a knife in case of trouble.

The boyfriend told police that after Taper arrived, he heard a slap before Taylor give a signal there was a problem. When the boyfriend came out from the other room, Taylor told him Taper had struck her with a gun, and then Taper fired at the couple.

The boyfriend survived two gunshot wounds.

And this story barely makes the paper appearing as the last item in Regional Briefing on page 3B.
