New report highlights widening racial disparities for children in Wisconsin

On September 10, the Wisconsin Council on Children & Families highlighted the Race for Results: Wisconsin’s Need to Reduce Racial Disparities, a policy report recently published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation that found that children of color face immense barriers to success in key categories of well-being, and that the status of African-American children in Wisconsin is the worst in the nation.

Here are three key facts regarding African-American and other children of color in Wisconsin.

  • Thirty percent of Wisconsin’s white children live in households below 200% of the poverty level, while nearly 80% of African-American children experience that level of economic insecurity. Meanwhile, about two-thirds of Wisconsin’s Latino and American Indian kids live in households below 200% of the poverty line.
  • White adults ages 25 to 29 are three times as likely to have an associate’s degree or higher than their African-American or Latino peers.
  • White children are nearly six times more likely to be proficient in 8th grade math than their black fellow students.

I’d encourage you all to click the link I provided above to read the full report; it’s well worth it.

  1. Certainly there are disparities. In order to combat them, we need to understand them. And here we will no doubt part ways. Money, or lack of it, plays a role, as does racism, but these problems are exaggerated by the left while cultural differences are downplayed or ignored altogether. These cultural differences include a greater acceptance of government dependency and fatherless households, a greater embrace of prison culture coupled with negative attitudes towards education. Stew in that while attending an enabling public school for several years and you will exacerbate the disparities afflicting the minority population.

      1. It means the commenter is ‘projecting,’ blatant racism and bigotry as something ONLY others are capable of engaging in, Sue, though I do understand your question was rhetorical.

Coming to this thread late today, it appears at 8:41 am has failed to follow the provided links in the comment thread below or simply suffers with seriously impaired reading comprehension abilities. Cover photo in this link shows a young black male getting ready to embrace the prison culture but scrolling down offers further info in the form of graphs and charts, visual aids for the reading impaired.

As you figured out already Sue, at 8:41 am is the classic blame the victims meme. Fatherless households have nothing to do with those fathers being subject to death or arrest for walking while black.

  2. Denis, since you claim to know so much about “minorities,” I’ll assume you had a lot of ancestors who were slaves.

If you want to make the point that welfare doesn’t work, you start with the biggest welfare queens of all, Wall Street.

The link below is just one example of the “enabling.”

    http://seekingalpha.com/article/301260-bank-of-america-dumps-75-trillion-in-derivatives-on-u-s-taxpayers-with-federal-approval

To put $75 trillion in perspective, US GDP in 2012 was around $16.5 trillion. We blew a lot more than the $6 trillion they’re claiming in Iraq and Afghanistan. Social Security’s Trust Fund is around $2.3 trillion. Bank of America is just one Wall Street bank. They all have derivative exposure. I’ve seen estimates of $700 trillion, but I don’t think anyone knows.

it’s a lot easier to understand why we don’t need to raise federal taxes to pay you and your relatives reparations.

  3. Thanks for making my case John Casper. You do so by avoiding my premise that cultural problems within the minority communities in question are great contributors to the disparity problem. Instead you change the subject to corporate welfare, assuming, with no evidence, that I somehow favor corporate welfare. I don’t. I also don’t like puppy killers, wife beaters, tsunamis or whatever other irrelevant point you might be contemplating. Stay on subject. Otherwise, you are just another enabler contributing to the disparity problem.

    1. “For-profit” policing within the minority communities in question are great contributors to the disparity problem.”

We need you phony preachers to figure out that there’s a reason the TEN COMMANDMENTS aren’t called the TEN suggestions.

“Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist housing policy. Until we reckon with our compounding moral debts, America will never be whole.”

“And if thy brother, a Hebrew man, or a Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. And when thou sendest him out free from thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty: thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing today.”

      — Deuteronomy 15: 12–15

“Besides the crime which consists in violating the law, and varying from the right rule of reason, whereby a man so far becomes degenerate, and declares himself to quit the principles of human nature, and to be a noxious creature, there is commonly injury done to some person or other, and some other man receives damage by his transgression: in which case he who hath received any damage, has, besides the right of punishment common to him with other men, a particular right to seek reparation.”

      — John Locke, “Second Treatise”

  4. Sue, an example would be the ridiculous baggy pants barely covering the bottom of the buttocks. Prison origins for that one. Probably not going to get hired looking like that.

John – so reparations are the answer to the disparities? I wonder just how much I owe Michael Jordan, for example. I am white but none of my ancestors were in the USA until after the civil war. Do I owe? What about whites of northern ancestry who in some many cases paid with their lives to end slavery? Do their ancestors get a discount?

    1. Denis,

In your initial comment you wrote: ” …In order to combat them, we need to understand them. And here we will no doubt part ways. Money, or lack of it, plays a role, as does racism, but these problems are exaggerated by the left while cultural differences are downplayed or ignored altogether….”

I thought that meant you had ancestors who were slaves and that “enabled” you to understand the “cultural differences.”

Now you’re claiming not to have any slave ancestors (do you have DNA to prove it? “Meet Your Cousin, the First Lady: A Family Story, Long Hidden” http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/17/us/dna-gives-new-insights-into-michelle-obamas-roots.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 ) .

If that’s the case, on what basis do you claim any “understanding” of the “cultural differences,” that you claim it’s so important to understand?

    2. I would argue that prison origins doesn’t translate to prison culture, especially in the case of a fashion trend whose most famous current devotee is Justin Bieber.
Most of those women with those ‘tasteful’ tattoos are neither gang members, prison alumni nor sailors, and the less than cultured origin of tattoos doesn’t usually reflect any attitudes on the part of these women other than it’s somehow pretty to have butterflies hovering just above their boobs.
Or maybe I shouldn’t generalize about an entire group of people. Sorry, ladies.

  5. John, I have made no claims of any sort regarding slave ancestors, nor will I, as it is entirely irrelevant, unless you are suggesting that only descendants of slaves can comment on racial disparities in Wisconsin. If that be the case, I fully expect that you will not criticize me or my argument, unless that is, you are a middle aged white male of Czech/Irish descent.

Getting back to my original point that nobody wants to deal with – Is there anything minority communities can do to improve their plight or are they hopelessly dependent on liberals to help them? If so, your 50+ years of failure ought to have them changing course. But don’t tell them that – you need their votes.

  6. OK, it is true, I am white. And I am so sorry for my pigmentation. Not sorry enough to pretend I or my ancestors are the cause of problems within the black community. Not sorry enough to write a check to Michael Jordan, and not sorry enough to have voted for President Obama. But for the moment lefties, pretend I am black, with saggy pants if you like Sue, with a simple question. Is there anything we can do to improve our plight, or are we entirely dependent on the good will of liberals for our well being?

    1. Denis,

What happened to you being Irish? Were you lying about the Czech part too?

I doubt you’re really “white,” (100% European-American) but based on what you’ve posted here, you’re not a conservative.

You’re an “enabler” who thinks stealing’s just fine and doesn’t require punishment and restitution. You think the TEN COMMANDMENTS are the Ten Suggestions.

Since you keep bringing up the fact that a lot of young men of color wear their pants “saggy,” you’re sound like a fashionista with a deep attraction to men’s rear ends. Glad you’re “out and proud.” That’s the one conservative position you’ve espoused, that government shouldn’t tell adults who they can have non-procreative sex with. Please practice safe sex. The saggy pants are a public symbol that they understand that they’re taking it up the a$$ from white supremacists.

TJ Lane, who taunted the families of his victims in the court room was captured ALIVE after escaping from prison. Do you think that had anything to do with his ethnicity? http://news.msn.com/crime-justice/escaped-school-shooter-captured-near-ohio-prison

Was Jason Sehorn the last “white” corner in the NFL? Since “whites” are almost 90% of the U.S. population, why aren’t they closer to 90% of the players in the NFL?

You’re a tool of the elites who learned from Jay Gould that they could “…hire one-half of the working class to kill the other half.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Gould

Above all, you’re an enemy of capitalism and any kind of meritocracy. Capitalism runs on sales. When no one except the elites (who in the vast majority of cases inherited their initial fortune) has any money, demand goes slack. When demand goes slack, so does supply. Real conservative are capitalists who understand that oligopolies and monopolies are the enemies of “free markets.”

Since you’re so interested in “white” people, the author of “Slavery By Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II” is “white.” Before he won a Pulitzer in 2009 for SBAN, he worked as the Atlanta Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal. http://www.amazon.com/Slavery-Another-Name-Re-Enslavement-Americans/dp/0385722702

      1. Geez JC, had I known you were posting as I was writing I would have saved my comment as a response for the next bigot to troll BB. Oh, thanks for the links. 😉

    2. No, there is nothing the oppressed minorities will be able to do until you quite pretending that you are not a bigot and a racist and actually understand that you and your ancestors along with historical unregulated free market capitalism are the cause of the problem of (for an obvious example, Apartheid in Milwaukee) oppression of minority peoples.

The fact that your myopic world view and obvious personal prejudices are clear in your own statement, in assuming everyone commenting at this site is a generic, automatically to be spurred, “liberal,” along with your demand for absolutist answers to a contrived circumstance and question, confirms your personal elitist schtick and blame the victims bias.

Furthermore, “liberals,” as I sense that you see them, have generally been of more help, not enough or perfect in any respect though, in helping to loosen the chains of slavery responsible for oppression, physical hardships, unfair imprisonment and genocide of particular minorities,.

People here, who make a living retailing goods produced in foreign countries by children and families under slave labor conditions are bigots and abusers. Most are also racists. How is that currency exchange rate with India working out these days?

It will take everyone and anyone who CARES about undoing centuries of genocide, racism, xenophobia and classist economic oppression to address the problems. So which side are you on? Caring or not?

  7. John, re the lack of white NFL cornerbacks: Obviously, cultural differences can explain nothing, ever! Therefore, I think we have to look back some 200 years. White slaveowners pretty much sat around and didn’t have to run much. Far too many white people are just lousy runners as a result. Some white runners remain fast however, but they are enslaved, if you will, by expectations of slowness. As a result, they were discriminated upon, perhaps ushered into other positions like punter or even into sports like bowling. If all you have is a hammer John, everything is a nail. Thus all disparities of any type can be explained by the legacy of slavery and racism. Try it yourself, its fun.

  8. Notquitethinking, so there is nothing oppressed minorities can do unless I, Denis Navratil, repudiate my racism and unregulated free markets?

I don’t believe I have such power over minorities. I don’t think they are helpless losers awaiting my redemption. No, not at all. In fact Notquite, there are a multitude of successful black Americans – perhaps all blacks are impoverished in your mind – the reality is different. How am I able to oppress some minorities while many succeed? What is in fact holding some black folks back are those constantly exposed to your low expectations.

I think blacks are capable of succeeding. You think they can’t. But somehow I am the racist. Hmmm.

    1. I’m glad you seem to finally understand that you are the bigot and the racist and part of the problem. First step of twelve or so, iirc. I already gave you an answer to your previous question. Ignoring my final little, three word question above and pretending you are somehow being unfairly characterized here, and your assuming to know my thoughts regarding answers to your additional series of inane questions, is exactly the answer I expected. My brunch-time is over.

    2. Denis,

If you weren’t so lazy, your arguments wouldn’t be such a punching bag. Try reading the links I provide. Ta-Nehisi Coates explained this in “The Case For Reparations.” Plenty of the descendants of slaves have been “successful.” They had to overcome all the obstacles that all Americans, who don’t win the game of sperm-roulette (inherit their wealth). On top of that, they had to overcome having slaves as ancestors.

When you decide that individual actions matter, tell the elites you want a 100% inheritance tax on all fortunes over say, $20 million dollars. Why should a billion dollar inheritance (like EACH of Koch brothers received) rob the off spring of the elites from the ability to “make it on their own?”

Ron Johnson married the daughter of a billionaire. Chris Abele’s the son of a billionaire. Mary Burke’s the daughter of a billionaire and Scott Walker married money. Are you seeing a pattern?

  9. Hey! That’s unfair, Dennis! You’re the saggy pants guy!
I’m not the one trying to convince everyone that Justin Bieber was born a poor black child.
