Fox station deceptively edits protesters’ chant into a ‘Kill A Cop’ chant

Yesterday frequent Blogging Blue commenter Denis Navratil commented about protesters shouting “What do we want! Dead cops! When do we want it! Now!” Here’s Denis’ comment:

Denis Navratil's Comment

At face value, protesters screaming about wanting dead cops seems pretty awful, but what’s more awful is that the protesters in question never said anything about wanting dead cops; their chants were “creatively” edited by a local Fox affiliate to appear that way. Here’s the full report from Talking Points Memo.

A Baltimore Fox affiliate apologized Monday night for a report it ran over the weekend that deceptively edited protesters to look like they were chanting “kill a cop.”

Gawker originally caught WBFF chopping up footage of a protest chant to sound like incitement to murder police on Monday.

The chant went “we won’t stop, we can’t stop, ’til killer cops, are in cell blocks,” according to C-SPAN footage.

But WBFF cut the audio short and told viewers that the words were in fact “we won’t stop, we can’t stop, so kill a cop.”

The station apologized both on its Facebook page and in an interview with one of the protestors leading the chant, Tawanda Jones.

This story strikes me as yet another example of the supposedly impartial news media drumming up controversy where none exists simply for the sake of having something “juicy” to report on, and it’s absolutely galling to me that a “legitimate” news source could be so irresponsible and reckless.

  1. Isn’t this the definition of libel- running something you know is a lie? Sue them for everything they have. And since it’s a Sinclair Broadcasting station (the Faux News of over-air TV ownership), it was probably relayed across a lot of other places. It’s well past time these stations pay a big price for the irresponsibility.

But the lie got through the dead-end trailer trash, and fanned the flames. Since reality doesn’t matter to that crowd, and a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on, I suppose “Mission Accomplished” for the Sinclair/ Faux News and the message they wanted to have them hear.

We know this game well in Wisconsin, and Journal Communications is especially guilty of it- allowing Fitzwalkerstani spin to be presented as fact.

    1. If this isn’t yelling fire in a crowded theater I don’t know what is. The FCC needs to jerk the license. And Jake, you have to stop using the phrase ” trailer trash ” I have two stepdaughters and four grand kids who live in trailer parks. They’re not trash, I can assure you.

      1. Sorry about that Steve, poor choice of words on my part, as it’s the “trash” that fall for this deceptive BS. I probably should have been more specific and said “human trash that would buy into this type of race-baiting coverage.”

Actually, this type of BS is really made for white-flight suburbs filled with ignorant people who don’t want to think about the issue, and instead want to blame those “uppity types” for daring to have a problem with unarmed friends and family members being killed by cops.

        1. “white-flight suburbs filled with ignorant people” says Jake.

Even after being taken to task for your trailer trash comment, you just can’t stop stereotyping. Only this time, you chose to smear and denigrate suburban whites, an apparently acceptable target here at BB.

          1. And Denis plays the victim card again!

Could you start keeping track of all the victim cards you play? Maybe we could institute a “Denis rule?” Commenters at BB are restricted to only playing ten victim cards a week. Or we could call it, “help hold down victim card inflation.”

  2. The FCC needs to come down hard on “news” shows or networks that fabricate things like this. Enough is enough. They’re using public airwaves to spread lies, and that is wrong.

    1. Sorry Dead-End Denis, Zach’s description of the faked coverage is correct. Stop trying to justify the racists and the liars, troll boy.

    2. Denis, I can’t help it you weren’t specific about which protesters you were referring to. The point of my blog entry is still valid, so no retraction is necessary.

I guess the lesson that you should take away from this is that if you’re going to make claims, cite evidence to back up those claims.

      1. I was specific Zach. I quoted the protesters directly and accurately. You responded by cherry picking among thousands of protests in an attempt to discredit me. When disproven with video evidence you still can’t acknowledge your mistake. At first I was prepared to assume your mistake was an honest one. Now I am not so sure. At any rate, there are protesters who want dead cops which is one of the points I have been making all along. It is so, despite the existence of a mistake, since corrected by a Fox News affiliate. At least they have the decency to admit mistakes.

        1. Denis,

Out of a chorus of tens of thousands of protesters voices you focus solely on a handful of haters who in no way represent the swelling movement to end police violence against people of color. That says a lot about you.

        2. Denis wrote: “I was specific Zach.”

          No, but you can start.

          You’ve got 1:54 minutes of video/audio.

          1. Translate all the cheers for all 1:54 of YOUR video/audio.

          2. Date your video/audio.

          3. Locate your video/audio.

If you want to insult Zach with empty claims about “specifics,” give us the name of the street they’re marching on. Then include the two cross streets. That’s “specific.”

          4. ID the protesters. Are they Aryan-supremacists calling for the killing of police officers?

          5. Validate that the video and the audio come from the same source.

Denis, it’s your massive enabling of bad law enforcement which is making it more unsafe for the vast majority who want to things the right way.

Below is the video of two St. Louis police officers emptying their weapons into Kajieme Powell, just a few days after Officer Wilson killed Mike Brown.

          http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/20/kajieme-powell-shooting_n_5696546.html

StLPD said Powell was “armed.” Use the video. Please tell us in which hand is Powell displaying a weapon. If you can’t do that, then please explain why those two police officers aren’t under arrest?

OT, Powell was mentally ill and had just shoplifted. They were supposed to arrest him. That’s their job.

          1. Denis,

John makes multiple good points here. The blurb on the video says these marchers are from the ” Millions March ” event. Doesn’t look like it to me. They’re a really small crowd compared to the tens of thousands who participated in the Millions March event. So who are they? Who led them? Who got the video? Was this a permitted march? Were police present who can validate the video’s claims? If so why haven’t they come forward? Who is Carswell Lightnose, the man who posted the video? What day is this march taking place? Lots of questions here that need to be answered, and it’s grossly irresponsible, at best, to be trafficking in this kind of thing before one knows what is actually going on.

            1. If I merely quote the cop hating protesters, I am not “specific” enough. If I provide video evidence, I am “grossly irresponsible.”

Steve, I am satisfied that the video and audio are authentic, and if I weren’t, I lack the expertise to expose a fraudulent product. However, there are experts in these matters. No doubt many such experts of your persuasion have taken a closer look at the video. We can deduce that they found no fakery, because if they had, it would be front page news and some politicians would be calling for jail time.

              1. Denis,

You wrote: “Steve, I am satisfied that the video and audio are authentic, and if I weren’t, I lack the expertise to expose a fraudulent product.”

That’s known as standing on your airhose.

If you admit you “lack the expertise to expose a fraudulent product (sic),” your “satisfaction” about “authenticity” isn’t worth squat.

                FYI,

In response to my question about what you considered your “areas of expertise,” you wrote this:

Logic, management, and I kick ass (sorry for the violent imagery non) in Pickleball. Why do you ask?

                http://bloggingblue.com/2014/11/robin-vos-is-a-petty-spiteful-little-man/

Hope you’re better at management and Pickelball than you are at logic, but I doubt it.

                1. Logic is just fine. If there were any problem with the authenticity of the video, it would be front page news. Since we are hearing crickets from the MSM, we can safely conclude that the tape is just fine. Of course I already stated as much. But don’t let evidence get in the way of your conclusions John. I suggest a better course for you is to pretend the tape doesn’t exist or to lie again and blame the Aryan supremacists.

                  1. Denis,

I can’t predict the future, but imho it’s possible that “I lack the expertise to expose a fraudulent product.”
could find its way into a lot of BB threads in which you appear.

Heck, folks might even start posting it under your stuff in Eau Claire.

As long as you’re getting paid to post, you don’t really care, do you?

                    #gophatesqualitycontrol

              2. Denis,

I didn’t suggest ” fakery “, rather I noted that the small band of protesters in the video didn’t seem to be a part of the tens of thousands of people who participated in the Millions March event. I don’t know who those people in your video are, who organized that march, who led them, who recorded the video or the guy who posted it to Youtube, and neither do you. All you know is someone recorded a group of people walking down a New York City street chanting about dead cops. You don’t know who they are, except that they don’t appear to be a part of the Millions March event.

                1. With a Fox News affiliate editing clips to sound like something they’re not, we can safely conclude nothing. It’s up to you, Denis, to prove this clip is of protesters from the anti-police brutality movement, and if you won’t then you’re nothing but a no good stinking smearmonger.

    3. And did you notice, Denis, that comments have been disabled on the video you linked to? Why would that be? No one can comment on the veracity, or lack thereof, of your claim. Why? If someone had actually captured on film Millions March protesters chanting for ” dead cops ” why would they disable comments? You’d think they’d let the world chime in with unanimous condemnation?

Anyone know where James O’Keefe is these days?

      1. Steve and John,

It appears that both of you may have missed my comments concerning the origin of the film in question, below, yesterday. The particular faction shouting dead cops refers to itself as #Turnuptheanger, and references can be found here.

        https://twitter.com/hashtag/TurnUpTheAnger?src=hash

That faction attached itself to Sharpton’s #MillionsMarchNYC and were the subjects captured in the 5th floor video shoot. However, after their first retraction and admission of film alteration by FOX, that did not stop them from using the 5th floor footage in attempting to paint all #BlackLivesMatter as cop killers as they let slide any separate honest attribution to the fringe group when they used it on this commentary (not news but opinion). Fookers!

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3-uEQdnchI

What is absolutely a greater threat than any protesters for social justice to “civil,” society is explained in this piece from about police refusing to be under anyone’s orders or control in NYC and I suppose this could as easily or already largely HAS happen in Oakland, Milwaukee, Orlando, or anywhere else, WI state patol under Pa Fitz?. Blue Coup anyone?

        http://blackagendareport.com/node/14590

  3. Any excuse to discredit the movement and to deny the reality of social, economic and racial injustice. Ignorance is bliss they say.

I only infrequently ponder what it is that bigots celebrate through this holiday season.

    1. From an article here: http://mic.com/articles/107028/the-true-lesson-of-black-lives-matter-is-that-police-lives-matter-too

Dec. 22, 2014: A previous version of this article included video which misidentified protesters at a Dec. 13th rally in New York City, the same day as the peaceful #MillionsMarchNYC. The video is certainly from that day, but the contingent of protesters featured in that video are black bloc anarchists. We regret the error.

The closest I have come to finding an explanation for the overhead, 5th story shot, video mentioned here, which came from this article. Obviously outliers and fringe, condoned by no one but themselves, so who are they?. This “group” is not representative of the left in any respect.

      1. Another interesting link to the 5th floor video comes from the The Daily Beast.

        http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/12/23/who-started-new-york-s-dead-cops-chant.html

Anger that is to be expected when we have such a willfully blind and ignorant contingent of right-wing racists refusing to acknowledge the problem and their part in causing and in further maintaining all forms of institutional, financial, legal and social injustice against non-white minorities, women, the poor and blue collar labor everywhere.

  4. I never thought I would see the day when nonquixote was the most intellectually honest of the progressives at BB. Pretty low bar being set by John, Steve, even Zach on this thread.

    1. And with an honest look at this, using as an example the Daily Beast piece, I’ve been discussing with others the lengths by which the author has gone to focus and construct a narrative that there are “dangerous,” anarchists as a large part of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

On the flip side, appearing at first glance to be reliable, “reporting,” this DB article can, just as easily act as an online form of propaganda for and maybe even created by sympathizers for NYC police, to declare that they are “on a war-time footing,” to justify their union president’s promising to not follow normal chain of command structure in performing their “duties.”

As FOX attempted to get away with lying in the OP link at the top, FOX reporting of the 5th story video is also a deliberate “coloring,” of reality for the purpose of civil repression of our rights as citizens. Agent provocateurs at least every bit as dangerous as any few window smashers in an otherwise peaceful march for civil rights and social justice.

Lowest bar of all set with your introduction of the 5th story video link 12/24 at 7:17am lazily or purposely posted without further research on your part. Zach came with a fully flushed story. A normally high bar at that.

Repeating, I only infrequently ponder what it is that bigots celebrate through this holiday season.

    2. No, NQ, I didn’t see your links before I posted mine last night. So if it’s been established that the film is authentic, then let’s apply the Denis Navratil mode of theorizing and all agree that the Tea Party wants cops dead.

When anti-government zealots Jerald and Amanda Miller ambushed and murdered two Las Vegas police officers last summer they draped a ” Don’t Tread On Me ” Gadsden flag over one of the bodies before they left. The Gadsden flag is, of course, one of the most identifiable symbols of the Tea Party movement.

      http://abcnews.go.com/US/las-vegas-cop-killers-husband-wife-team/story?id=24052877

Therefore we can reasonably conclude, according to the impeccable logic of Denis Navratil, that there are folks who want cops dead and they’re definitely aligned with the Tea Party.

But where was/is the condemnation and indictment of the Tea Party from Denis? I must have missed that.

      1. I see you were typing as I was just posting. I had recalled and then re-read others referencing the Las Vegas “team.” I hesitated to bring it up in this thread, thanks for the way you did do it.

I did read several articles about the Bundy, out-to-lunch bunch, Tim McVeigh and several other white extremist groups/individuals and the difference in the way they are treated in the media, i.e. nothing like #BlackLivesMatter human rights advocates demonstrating for justice. They’re subtly somehow seen as “freedom,” fighters or something else, that minorities of color, women and blue collar workers somehow don’t measure up to in terms of courage, or justification for voicing their grievances.

  5. It is a joy to see the BB arguments change with each defeat. First, no chanting for dead cops, followed by the tape must be faked, followed by, oops, must be the Tea Party. I guess it was probably the Tea Party that burned Ferguson to the ground too, eh guys?

    1. Clear in your statement claiming there are winners and losers here, framing your conclusion thus, you are ultimately the ONLY obvious LOSER by FAILING to catch ANY of the drift of the discussion. Several potential explanations were discussed about the second video, the one that you introduced. You were asked about its authenticity or origins and you responded with NOTHING. I found the video source information you refused to come up with, along with ideas as to who those marchers might be.

I briefly mentioned differences in how MSM treats either Black or Caucasian extremist cop killers in responding to Steve’s comment where NO blame was attributed to anyone about anything. NOBODY argued what you have concluded. Try reading the links people bring just for once.

      1. Eight of the victims in Oklahoma City were law enforcement officers, 19 of them were kids, three were pregnant women, and 99 of them were federal government workers. I guess the hard right Libertarians got what they wanted: a smaller government.

            1. But do you denounce the violence from your side of the aisle, Denis, with the same enthusiasm you display in trying to smear all progressives with your cutesy game of guilt by association? You paint yourself as the champion of intellectual honesty here at BB. Time to lead by example. Ask Zach for a guest post spot and denounce the cop killers and extreme anti-government elements in your camp. The Cliven Bundy’s, the Eric Frein’s, the Jared and Amanda Millers, the next Timothy McVeigh. BE intellectually honest, Denis, and show us all how it’s done. This is your chance to demonstrate your moral superiority.

  6. I don’t see the point in denouncing cop killers as it ought to be obvious where people stand on such behavior. That it is not so obvious with some on the left no doubt contributes to the extreme defensiveness on display here at BB.

    1. “I don’t see the point in denouncing cop killers”

      Shorter Denis.

“I’m worried if I even commented something Like that, it might threaten my income from the Koch brothers and Americans AGAINST Prosperity.”

Nobody but you has a problem “denouncing cop killers.”

      “Blue Lives Matter….”

“…The killing of police officers is not only the destruction of life but an attack on democracy itself. We do not live in a military dictatorship, and police officers are not the representatives of an autarch, nor the enforcers of law handed down by decree. The police are representatives of a state that derives its powers from the people. Thus the strong reaction we have seen to Saturday’s murders is wholly expected and entirely appropriate….”

      http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/12/blue-lives-matter-nypd-shooting/383977/

That’s from Ta-Nehisi Coates, the son of a “black panther.”

      1. John, it is not clear to me who you are quoting, starting with “I’m worried”… perhaps you can share the author and origin of the quote. It seems as though you are implying that it was a quote from me.

          1. What is that word, when you attribute a comment to someone, using quotations, when no such comment was written or uttered? I think they call that lying.
John them said, “I am a pathetic liar and I sincerely apologize to the one and only Denis Navratil for my lies.”

“No problem John” said Denis. “I don’t expect decency or honesty from you, especially after you threatened my property.” Denis added, “my only hope is that objective readers of BB will know that John fabricates quotes.”

            1. Denis,

There you go again, playing the victim card.

Do you have a link to your baseless claim that anyone “threatened” your property?

              Did you call law enforcement?

If so, whom did you contact? What precinct did you contact?

If you did not contact law enforcement, why not?

  7. If you don’t see the point in denouncing cop killers, of whatever political stripe, then why were you ever involved in these threads to begin with? Oh, I get it. You just want to denounce progressives. Gotcha.

  8. Seems reading comprehension is a problem at BB. The reason I don’t need to condemn cop killing is that it ought to be obvious. Since it apparently is not obvious to some who’s political allies apparently enjoy a dead cop now and again, I will be very explicit. I am against cop killers. I also oppose puppy torture, clitoris mutilation, arson, roadside bombs, flying airplanes into buildings, throat slitting, and jaywalking. This is not an exhaustive list as I also condemn rape, lying about rape, racism, lying about racism, on-line threats, lying about on-line threats and so on.

  9. Denis, you omitted one of the most egregious acts by the boring, irrelevant, impolite, unwanted souls on the internet; that is, trolling by trolls AKA “killers of discussions.”

  10. Duane12, if by trolling you mean defending true statements, then I am guilty as charged. However, I will not include defending the truth as among the things that I condemn. I suggest you start your own list.

  11. Yes, I believe the chant was edited.
