College Democrats of Wisconsin Chair Responds To Gov. Walker’s 2015 Budget Address

From my email this evening: College Democrats of Wisconsin Chair Zach Madden released the following statement regarding Gov. Scott Walker’s 2015 Budget Address.

“Gov. Walker’s 2015 state budget is the worst budget for students in recent memory. After campaigning on a tuition freeze, Gov. Walker has betrayed students by proposing an unprecedented $300 million in UW System cuts. These cuts are likely to lead to some of the harshest tuition hikes the UW System has seen in years. Experts from the Wisconsin Center on the Advancement of Post Secondary Education already predict that these tuition hikes will shut many Wisconsinites out of the UW System altogether.

Higher education should not be a political issue. Every Wisconsinite, regardless of party affiliation, deserves an affordable college education. Unfortunately, Gov. Walker’s cuts risk putting that education out of reach for far too many. We’re glad to see students across the state mobilizing to stop Gov. Walker’s attack on the UW System. Over the next few weeks, College Democrats of Wisconsin will work to support these efforts and lobby our legislators to vote against any budget that makes college less affordable.

If students organize, we can prevent Gov. Walker from gutting our world-class universities. We invite all our classmates to make their voices heard and join us in working to save our UW System from these devastating cuts.”
