I don’t have a horse in this race and really haven’t paid that much attention to it. But there is a primary on Tuesday to thin the field for the race to replace David Cullen as the County Supervisor in the 15th Supervisory District. Mr. Cullen was elected County Treasurer in November 2014.
The three candidates are Eddie Cullen (the county treasurer’s son), Wauwatosa Alderman Jason Wilke and businessman Nicholas Hunt. As I said, I haven’t followed this race and have no endorsement to make. But there was a short synopsis of each candidates positions in this morning’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and a seeming contradiction stood out in one of the candidates comments.
And that candidate would be Mr. Nicholas Hunt. As part of his campaign promises, Mr. Hunt has stated that he will immediately accept the reduced supervisor salary that goes into effect in 2016. And to make that clear, a campaign slogan is:
“For the community, not for the check.”
But then a few sentences later, Mr. Hunt is quoted as saying:
He said he decided to run for the seat after concluding the board did not always represent the interests of taxpayers.
I don’t know, I don’t view taxpayers as the sum total of the community…and I do see doing what’s best for the whole community is the sum total of the job of county supervisor. Although watching out for how and where government spends it’s money is important…managing the needs of the community is the number one task on every elected officials to do list.

It’s a big county, a billion dollar annual budget and a pension fund that’s almost double(?) that. It takes smart people and they can’t afford to work for nothing.
In terms of destroying local government, cutting Supervisor salaries was a brilliant (sarcasm) move by Mr. Abele.
Milw. Cty is the worst governmental body in state, embarrassment to all of us. Run completely by brain dead liberals. Embarrassment even to good dems. Keep it, up and you will never see elected office again in Wi.
Hunt strikes me as a Republican trying really hard not to let folks know that’s what he is. When I asked him via email if he identified as a Democrat or a Republican, he wouldn’t give me a straight answer.
@Zach Wisniewski, I agree with you, but on the other hand the County Supervisor position is SUPPOSED to be non-partisan. Clearly it hasn’t worked out that way in recent years. But at the same time, that may be why he’s not giving you a straight answer.
Unfortunately, the GOP’s forgotten Reagan was pro-union and pro-collective bargaining.
