Earlier this week the Milwaukee Common Council passed a measure by a vote of 8 to 6 that would permit the city lobbyist to pressure the Wisconsin legislature to change the law to permit the Common Council to remove a Milwaukee fire chief or police chief. Currently state law gives the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission jurisdiction over the hiring and firing of both chiefs. Milwaukee Mayor Barrett immediately vetoed the bill vowing to keep the appointment of the fire and police chiefs as non-political.

The bill stated both the fire and police chief but it is common knowledge that their target is Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn…and they kept up the pretense until today…when unannounced mayoral candidate, 14th District Alderman Tony Zielinski sent out this email:

October 18, 2017 Ald. Tony Zielinski

MEDIA ADVISORY

News conference to address mayoral veto on
measure to enable Council to fire police chief

Alderman Tony Zielinski will host a City Hall news conference at 12 p.m. (noon)

The Council voted 8 yes, 6 noes (and one member excused) in favor of the measure,
which seeks a state law change to allow the Council to terminate a chief of police on a
super-majority vote.

Joining Alderman Zielinski will be Alderman Bob Donovan, chair of the Public Safety
and Health Committee, and Alderman Mark A. Borkowski, chair of the Judiciary and
Legislation Committee, and Alderman José G. Pérez.

What: Mayoral veto news conference

Where: First floor rotunda at City Hall – 200 E. Wells St.
[emphasis mine eh]

Gloves are off…intentions made clear. But beyond the fact that this is just a really bad idea all the way around…the fact that it is aimed at a single individual makes it completely onerous and without any merit whatsoever. I’s be really curious to hear why they think this press conference will have any bearing on the eventual outcome.

One Response to It Really Is Only About the Police Chief

  1. Edward Susterich says:

    Zielinski, Borkowski, Perez, and Donovan–

The reckless behaviour of Trump must be contagious…it has now reached the local government level.
