MKE Common Council: In recognition of unions on Labor Day

Eight out of Fifteen? Really?? Happy Labor Day!! From our email:

Statement from members of the Milwaukee Common Council – Alderman Cavalier Johnson, Alderman Scott Spiker, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderman Robert J. Bauman, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa

As we celebrate Labor Day today, we want to take a moment to call attention to the lasting impact that unions have made on the workforce.

Throughout history, unions have been at the forefront of worker’s rights. Most notably, unions have played a key role in securing the 8 hour workday and 40 hour work week, helped lead the charge for widespread employer-based healthcare, pushed for vacation time, overtime pay and paid holidays, among other accomplishments.

Even today, unions continue to advocate for change such as an increase in minimum wage through the Fight for $15.

So while we are not celebrating this year with a parade and Laborfest, it is still vital that we recognize unions for all the positive contributions they have made to the American workforce.
