It’s Time to Get Bold!

BoldIt’s the morning after an election that I thought I was prepared to lose (if that’s where the night took us). I was wrong. Instead, I’m angry. Not at Walker or even the Republicans, but at a Democratic Party for embracing a philosophy of mediocre, middle of the road, handpicked candidates. At a Democratic Party for encouraging candidates to run away from our Democratic President.  At a Democratic Party for being ashamed of true liberal principles like promoting national health care reform, common sense gun control, pro-labor/anti-trade legislation, women’s rights, the environment, progressive tax reform, protecting against voter suppression efforts, social and moral values, etc.

So this is my plea to the Democratic Party: It’s time for a major switch in philosophy. It’s time to get bold. It’s time to get bad ass. It’s time to make your case. It’s time to grow a pair. It’s time to be loud and proud of the Democratic Party platform.

Voters respect boldness. Republican leaders have figured out that this is the way to win. Why can’t Democrats? Conservatives have the Tea Party. Where is our extreme left? What do we have? Nothing, because the Democratic Party (State and National) are simply too scared to embrace “the fringe”.

Freakin’ Halloweekend: Spotlight on The Have Nots (as X)

Freakin' Halloweekend

In anticipation of “Freakin’ Halloweekend” – coming Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the High Noon Saloon in Madison – we’re taking a moment to profile and interview some of the bands who will be donning musical costumes for the occasion.    Please see the schedule below.

What band are you performing as for Freakin’ Halloweekend?

X

Who are your members in your band and are they in other local Madison bands? If so, what are they?

T.B. Bonebrake (Goat Radio, Knuckel Drager), Nikxene Cervenka (The Lurkhards), Kurty “Zoom” Johnson (Knuckel Drager, Rodeo Bums), Jack Doe (Goat Radio and a bunch of Milwaukee bands)

When you were younger (or heck, even now), what band/musician did you want to be (or dress up as for Halloween) when you grew up?

Younger: Kiss. Now: Not Kiss.

What do you think the band you’re being would think if they saw you? Would they be flattered? Outraged? Impressed?

Billy Zoom would probably beat the sh!t out of us while smiling in a creepy manner. He seems angry that way.

Are you dressing up as the band?

Only if we can find a black see-through mesh sleeveless shirt for Jack

What other band playing at FHW are you most excited about seeing?

All of them!

What experience do you want the audience to take away from your show?

To feel like they’re at the Whiskey in 1982 all hopped up on goofballs.

Freakin’ Halloweekend: Spotlight on No Class (As Motorhead!)

Q: What band are you performing as for Freakin’ Halloweekend?

A: The greatest band in the history of rock and roll… MOTORHEAD!!!!!

Q: Who are your members in your band and are they in other local Madison bands? If so, what are they?

A: Mike from the Rotten Tommys as Philthy Animal; Mike formerly of Tangy as Fast Eddie; Joe of The Gran Fury as Lemmy.

Q: When you were younger (or heck, even now), what band/musician did you want to be (or dress up as for Halloween) when you grew up?

A: Mike wanted to be Hendrix but Jimi was black and skinny and Mike is neither of those. He’s got Voodoo on guitar though. The other Mike probably wanted to be Mitch Mitchell so he could watch Jimi Hendrix every night. Joe won’t admit this, but he secretly wanted to be Lemmy so he could carry Hendrix’s gear every night.

Q: What do you think the band you’re being would think if they saw you? Would they be flattered? Outraged? Impressed?

A: They wouldn’t give two fucks. Lemmy would be on the video poker machine with a Jack and Coke and Philthy would be on the toilet I’m sure. As for Eddie, he’d probably leave and form another tribute band with Pete Way.

Q: Are you dressing up as the band?

A: Facial warts and all

Q: What other band playing at FHW are you most excited about seeing?

A: ZZ Top and Janis Joplin. We like those guys with the beards a lot, and hippie chicks are easy.

Q: What experience do you want the audience to take away from your show?

A: Stone deaf forever.

Freakin’ Halloweekend: Spotlight on The Bobby McGees

Freakin' Halloweekend

In anticipation of “Freakin’ Halloweekend” – coming Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the High Noon Saloon in Madison – we’re taking a moment to profile and interview some of the bands who will be donning musical costumes for the occasion.    Please see the schedule below.

What band are you performing as for Freakin’ Halloweekend?

The Bobby McGees as Janis Joplin

Who are your members in your band and are they in other local Madison bands? If so, what are they?

Ellie Erickson – lead guitar – The Sigourney Weavers and Shotgun Mary, and the now unfortunately defunct Croaker

Rick Streed – rhythm guitar – The Drain and Crackity Jones (Pixies tribute band)

Jake Ripp-Dieter – bass – I Saw the Creature

Andrew Schroeder – drums – I Saw the Creature and The Bell Hops

Kevin Knapp – keys – Venice Gas House Trolley

Becky Lipsitz – trumpet

Jordan Foster – trumpet

Meghan Rose – vocals – Little Red Wolf, I Saw the Creature, Damsel Trash

When you were younger (or heck, even now), what band/musician did you want to be (or dress up as for Halloween) when you grew up?

I wanted to be a writer more than anything when I was younger. I wanted to be Andrew Lloyd Webber. Now after being in bands I’m more of a performer. And honestly I’ve already had the esteemed privilege of portraying Courtney Love in Hole for the 2012 Halloweekend. That may be the pinnacle for me. Janis will have to take a close second. I mean, she died before we had enough quotes from her, you know?

What do you think the band you’re being would think if they saw you? Would they be flattered? Outraged? Impressed?

I think Janis and her band mates would be greatly amused, and semi-impressed. I think they would also be high and she would clap a lot and say “ALL RIGHT! ALL RIGHT! ROCK N ROLL MAN!” And then shake my hand after the show and offer me some SoCo.

Are you dressing up as the band?

Absolutely! Woodstock fashion all the way. I’ve got bell bottoms, bangles, red glasses, and a lot of feathers. I already have the hair. Jake is growing a mustache. And Ellie is the epitome of the 60s every day of her life. So it won’t be much of a change for her I don’t think…

What other band playing at FHW are you most excited about seeing?

I’m most excited to see Garbage. Love all the songs they’re doing, number one, and I can’t wait to see Annelies Howell transform into Shirley Manson. I’ve already gotten a taste of it because we’re friends, but I wanna see the full show. She’s gonna kill it. I know Jake is most excited for ZZ Top. We saw the real ZZ Top at Bonnaroo last year and he was beside himself.

What experience do you want the audience to take away from your show?

I want the audience to feel like Janis came back from the dead to give them the best damn show of her life. And everyone to party like it’s 1969.

Freakin Halloweekend: Spotlight on The Shirley Manson Family

Freakin' Halloweekend

In anticipation of “Freakin’ Halloweekend” – coming Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the High Noon Saloon in Madison – we’re taking a moment to profile and interview some of the bands who will be donning musical costumes for the occasion.    Please see the schedule below.

What band are you performing as for Freakin’ Halloweekend?

Madison’s own: Garbage!

Who are your members in your band and are they in other local Madison bands? If so, what are they?

Our line up:

Pam Barrett – Keys and Vocals – BingBong, Sigourney Weavers

Danny Hicks – Guitar – BingBong

Julie Kiland – Bass and Vocals – BingBong, Sigourney Weavers

Randy Ballwahn – Drums – The German Art Students

Annelies Howell – Vocals – The German Art Students

Kirk Wall – Guitar – The German Art Students

When you were younger (or heck, even now), what band/musician did you want to be (or dress up as for Halloween) when you grew up?

(Annelies)  There are so many! As a child of the 80’s, I studied early MTV like it was grad school. I loved Michael Jackson the dances from Thriller and Beat it.  I also loved Cyndi Lauper and Pat Benetar.  A couple of years ago I got to live out a dream when I was sang in Mauston, a Boston tribute.  That was a major highlight.

What do you think the band you’re being would think if they saw you? Would they be flattered? Outraged? Impressed?

I hope they’d be flattered! In order to perform as Garbage, we’ve all done our homework.  It’s a lot of fun to immerse ourselves in the music and learn the parts.

Are you dressing up as the band?

Yes.  It’s Halloween, after all.

What other band playing at FHW are you most excited about seeing?

I’m totally psyched to see Meghan Rose as Janis Joplin. She totally nails it, and there are fabulous players in that band. It’s especially exciting to see a tribute for an artist that (sadly) isn’t around anymore.

What experience do you want the audience to take away from your show?

We want the audience to sing and dance along with their favorite Garbage songs.   We’re gonna have a kick-ass Halloween!

The 8th Annual Freakin’ Halloweekend is Happening!

Hello Blogging Bluers!

X, Alice in Chains, The New Pornographers, Janis Joplin, Motorhead, ZZ Top and so many more bands!

That’s right, Freakin’ Halloweekend,  where local bands dress up and perform as tribute bands and rock out for the Halloween weekend at the High Noon Saloon, is once again upon us.

Previously, I organized the event along with Jesse Russell and Michael Donnelly (founders and editors of Dane101) along with Cathy Dethmers (owner of the High Noon). Sadly, Dane101 is no more, but it doesn’t mean the partying has to stop!    With Zach’s blessing, I plan to post profiles of the tribute bands, right here on Blogging Blue.

Chad Ovshak and myself are organizing and emceeing the event, along with the High Noon.  We very much hope you join the festivities.

The New World Horror: The Final Grovel

joshcemetary_edTable ReadSteve Renfro
Nothing is worse than asking strangers for money.  But when you have a product that you have poured your heart and soul into, when you have a product that you know will be great based on the exceptional talent of the people around you, that too have put their own blood, sweat and tears into it….well, let’s just say it makes it a lot easier.
With 3 days left and only $875 to reach our goal of $5000.  I’ve been forced into the groveling mode.
  Fern Make-Up
So bear with me while I explain why you should donate money to The New World Horror.
  • We’re making a black & white horror movie in Wisconsin (Janesville, Milwaukee and Madison)
  • The premise upset some on the right wing (including Charlie Sykes and Vickie Mckenna)
  • We got some great media including (WKOW, OnMilwaukee, The Capitol Times, Shepard Express, Madison Commons, Sly’s Show (Progressive) , Kurt Barron, Right Wisconsin, Godfather Politics (Right), Vickie Mckenna (Right) and we even got on The Daily Kos (Right).   Side Note: I’d like to give a big thanks to Zach who has been our #1 supporter here at Blogging Blue.   Also, to Sly for being the first to give us some exposure.  Rob Thomas for being the first to dig deep and write about us.  Of course, also Collin Roth and John Tyburski.
  • The movie has Tea Party zombies, but it’s not totally a zombie movie.
  • The movie also has blobs, demons and a Kurt Russellish character.
  • Our make-up is SICK! It’s totally, ridiculously awesome…and it will make you puke!
  • We have already spent a lot of our own money to guarantee a cinematic experience, with equipment like a jib crane, a homemade dolly, an actual camera designed for cinema (the Black Magic Camera), top of the notch lighting and sound and various other expensive shit.
  • We have people that actually know how to use them.
  • The cast and crew will need to use a porta potty for most of the shoot.
  • We’ve got strong (very strong) female protagonists and antagonists in the movie.
  • We’ve got a lesbian knife throwing priest in the movie.
  • My dad, a conservative, has agreed to be a Tea Party zombie in the movie (that alone is worth money).
  • For those that steer right, the movie has a super leftist candidate that we have some fun with as well.
  • Let’s just say I received some death threats.
  • There will be nudity (male and female).
  • Did I mention we have a lesbian knife throwing priest?

Groveling time:
So please friends, family, extended family, acquaintances, Blogging Blue readers, that guy I met on the street the other day, the cashier at Taco Bell, that pizza delivery guy I tipped really nicely about 6 months ago, fellow filmmakers, artists, musicians, those who like zombie movies but don’t want to see “just another zombie movie”, those who like black and white movies, those who like just a little political commentary in their film without it being too preach, those who want to see a character based off of Kurt Russell, those who want to see a movie about 8 strangers from all walks of life working together to fight against a demon virus from hell, my fellow American, I’m asking you please, consider donating some of that coin you have to our crazy little film.  Any little bit helps.
Your name will be on the credits and I promise you…you will not be sorry.

The New World Horror – Forward w/ Kurt Baron and Meeting a Goal!

As some of you may know we are making a horror movie called The New World Horror.    It’s got Tea Party Zombies! It’s got Demons!  It’s got Blobs!  It’s got Patriots!

  • Through our IndieGoGo campaign and our Fundraiser at the High Noon Saloon, we have officially raised over $1000 in the first week of going live with our fundraising efforts.  This is HUGE for us and a goal we tried very hard to achieve!  Thanks so much to all of you who have contributed your time or money or both. Thanks to Zach for graciously posting IGG on the homepage of this very website!
  • Of course, we’re far from over.   If you haven’t already, consider being a part of this kick ass thing we’re doing.   For as little as $5 you can be a “blood donor” which means the more “blood donors” we have, the more blood will be in the movie.   There’s also a $75 perk that lets you choose a Tea Party slogan that we will put on a Tea Party sign (misspelled) in the movie.  Of course, there’s other shit to.  Check it out if you want by clicking here.
  • Producer/Art Director Fernanda Loaiza-Renfro & myself visited Forward with Kurt Baron to discuss the movie, why Fern doesn’t like the look of Steven Spielberg’s face and why the movie Alligator is one of the best horror movies ever made.  If you’d like to listen to the podcast, click here.
  • That’s about it.  Here’s our trailer:  (This is Joe McCarthy real tombstone-Shivers) – Thanks again!

The New World Horror Fundraiser (That’s right Tea Party Zombies) – Sly, The High Noon and IndieGoGo

Our horror movie we are making about Tea Party Zombies is kicking off it’s fundraising efforts at the High Noon Saloon Happy Hour with The German Art Students, The Arkoffs and Harris Lemberg today.  The show is from 5-8pm.  The teaser trailer for the film will also be projected on the screen.

Producer/Make-Up and Gore specialist Fernanda Louiza-Renfro and myself went on Sly’s show last night to discuss the fundraiser, the film and our IndieGoGo campaign that went live today.

The interview with Sly is right here for those interested.

Our IndieGoGo Campaign is right here.  (It’s got some interesting perks as well as the Teaser Trailer featuring Joe McCarthy’s actual tombstone…shivers)

Or you can just like us on Facebook.
