Caterpillar to lay off 40% of its blue collar workforce at local plants

This is a terrible blow for South Milwaukee… Caterpillar Inc. will lay off up to 300 employees at its Milwaukee-area factories before June and says it will reduce labor costs at its other U.S. plants as sales of mining and construction equipment have slowed.

The local layoffs, described by the company as short-term and temporary, [...]

If I Only Had a Train!

When Governor Walker killed the almost high speed rail between Milwaukee and Madison, he not only turned down the $800 million for construction, but he killed the jobs that went along with the train building and maintenance facilities here in Milwaukee. And of course the resulting economic development along the upgraded rail corridor and the [...]

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Comes to Defense of Keystone XL Pipeline

Following an OP Ed Piece in the NY Times by Thomas L Friedman extolling the virtues of not building the Keystone XL Pipeline, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Vice President Greg Stringham valiantly rushed to the defense of the pipeline. And he stayed solidly with the company line that the Canadian tar sands oil was [...]

Problem With Walker Budget Means Borrowing $1 Billion

On Friday the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured an article quoting the Wisconsin State Legislature’s budget office had reported that under Governor Walker’s budget proposal, the state would be required to borrow nearly $1 billion dollars over the two year period. Most of that money, $994 million, would go to the transportation budget. Now, I am [...]

Tell the President That Social Security IS NOT On the Table!

New stories today say President Obama is willing to negotiate cuts to the social safety net to resolve the sequestration issue:

These include the Social Security retirement program and Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs for the elderly, disabled and poor that are becoming more expensive as a large segment of the U.S. population hits [...]

Mining not an economic cure-all, at least not in Minnesota

Republican Gov. Scott Walker and his rubber-stamp legislature should read this before they continue to deceive Wisconsin’s citizens about the “job creation” potential of an iron mine in northwestern Wisconsin. Mining could be a huge economic boost for the state, say proponents of an iron ore mine in northwestern Wisconsin.

But it hasn’t been a [...]

Whither MKE Cnty: Sup Alexander Suggests Dropping Employee Healthcare

In an incredibly callous proposal, freshman County Supervisor Deanna Alexander called for a study by the county to review dropping health care coverage for the 4,400 current county employees and simply paying the federal fine of $2,000 per employee under the Affordable Care Act. She is suggesting that the county could save $103 million annually [...]

Whither MKE Cnty: Maybe a County Convention Is In Order

Yesterday marked the first forum that I am aware of that was aimed to discuss possible futures for Milwaukee County. County Supervisor Deanna Alexander held a town hall to gauge the interest in changing the make up of county government. The article in today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says that only about two dozen people were [...]

Just one thought on Gov. Walker’s “State of the State”

Republican Gov. Scott Walker during tonight’s State of the State address: “Helping the people of Wisconsin create more jobs is my number one priority.”

Someone should tell that to the 111 workers at the Golden Guernsey Dairy who were permanently laid off just over a week ago.

Walker administration official on job creation under Gov. Walker: “We suck. We’re bad.”

At least Lisa Johnson, vice president of entrepreneurship and innovation with the quasi-government Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, is honest about how much of a failure Gov. Scott Walker’s job creation efforts have been (emphasis added): From Johnson’s wheelhouse in the new economy, the rankings aren’t any better. Wisconsin came in 31st among 50 states in [...]
