Yesterday I noted Republican State Rep. Robin Vos’ push to not only disband the southeastern Wisconsin RTA, but to split the RTA’s remaining balance – roughly $1.27 million – equally between Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties. Facing $7 million in cuts to Milwaukee County’s transit system thanks to the draconian budget proposed by Republican Gov. [...] In his proposed 2011-2013 biennial budget, Republican Gov. Scott Walker has proposed cutting transit aid by ten percent, with much of that figure coming from Milwaukee County, which has the state’s largest transit system. Lee Dreyfus, lays into the ridiculousness of the Walker Administration and their claims of “open for business”. In the column, Mr. McKelvey decries the Governor’s “short-term” thinking and points out how detrimental that is to the long-term future of our great state and [...] Yesterday Milwaukee County Supervisor candidate Jason Haas called out his opponent, Steve Kraeger, for backing Gov. Scott Walker’s fiscal policies while still claiming he can get the Hoan Bridge rebuilt ahead of schedule. “My opponent wants to have it both ways,” Haas said. “The reality is we cannot rebuild the Hoan Bridge overnight while simultaneously [...] After voting yesterday in support of Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to gut collective bargaining rights for Wisconsin’s public employees (a vote that may result in the loss of $46 million in federal transit funding for Wisconsin), far-right conservative Milwaukee County Executive candidate Jeff Stone boarded the Milwaukee County Transit Route 23 bus, presumably to show [...] Last week County Executive candidate Jim Sullivan announced his plan to provide funding to the Milwaukee County transit system and to lower Milwaukee County property taxes at the same time. Sullivan’s plan is simple: enact the referendum passed by Milwaukee County voters in 2008 and create a dedicated funding source for Milwaukee County Transit System. [...] I was amazed to read The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial “Closer Chicago Ties” supporting rail service and revealing claims that the MMAC raised its parochial head and surreptitiously proposed a plan to then Gubernatorial candidate Walker to spend $450 to $500 million of the railroad stimulus money for upgrades on the Milwaukee to Chicago Hiawatha route in lieu of the full Madison – Milwaukee – Chicago railroad plan. Their hypocrisy in not supporting the Madison – Milwaukee – Chicago route upgrade is amazing given the constant refrain that Milwaukee and Madison businesses and educational institutions should be working more closely together. [...] $5 a gallon for gas by 2012? Just take the train! Oh wait… Scott Walker’s “victory” on the issue of the high speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison is really a victory for states like California, Florida, Illinois, and nine other states.
