Everything & the Kitchen Sink

Since losing her status as the Democratic presidential frontrunner, Hillary Clinton has employed a few different strategies in an attempt to regain the momentum she once had, and the strategy du jour seems to be the “Everything & the Kitchen Sink” strategy, which involves tearing down Barack Obama as much as possible in the hope that she’ll drive Obama’s unfavorables up to the point where he’ll be viewed as unelectable. However, in doing so, Clinton runs the risk of doing irreparable damage to the eventual Democratic nominee, while in the process exposing herself as being less interested in making sure a Democrat wins the White House and more interested in her own selfish self interests.

In an entry for the Huffington Post, Gary Hart is right on the money:

By saying that only she and John McCain are qualified to lead the country, particularly in times of crisis, Hillary Clinton has broken that rule, severely damaged the Democratic candidate who may well be the party’s nominee, and, perhaps most ominously, revealed the unlimited lengths to which she will go to achieve power. She has essentially said that the Democratic party deserves to lose unless it nominates her.

In order for Hillary’s strategy to work – thus giving her the nomination – she’s going to have to work hard to tear Obama down, because Rasmussen shows Clinton with a 51% unfavorable rating, compared to Obama’s 45% unfavorable rating, and what’s more, recent WaPo poll shows Barack Obama faring far better against John McCain than Hillary Clinton.

Now I understand it takes a certain bit of ego to run for President, and I understand that candidates always think they’re more suited to be President than the other folks running, but I hope at some point Hillary Clinton and her supporters come to realize she’s playing a dangerous game – a game that could ultimately cost the Democrats the White House.
