Congratulations, Annette Ziegler!!!

You’re the first sitting Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice to be disciplined by your peers for violating the state’s judicial ethics code. The decision stems from Ziegler’s decision to preside over 11 cases involving West Bend Savings Bank, where her husband, J.J. Ziegler, is a director. In their decision the court called Ziegler’s action in those cases “a serious failing.” In a settlement reached with the State Ethics Board six weeks after her election as a Justice, Ziegler admitted she violated a provision of the state ethics code that says officials cannot act on matters in which they have a financial interest, and she agreed to pay a cash forfeiture and attorney fees for the state.

So congratulations Justice Ziegler…you’ve left your indelible mark on Wisconsin’s Judiciary.

  1. I was particularly appalled that she and one other nut on the court ruled against the family seeking an insurance company to pay for their 8 yr old son’s cancer treatments.
since when is high-dose chemotherapy not considered standard cancer treatment? When a HMO says so? According to Ziegler just because it was part of a trial treatment (which translates to study the results). I’m not sure what her thinking was when the doctor offered to take the kid out of the trial study and the HMO still refused payment……..don’t you just love these pro-life people more and more everyday?

  2. According to Justice Roggensack (and Ziegler, who signed onto the dissent), federal law requires a State court to defer to the policy administrator’s interpretation of whether or not the treatment was experimental for the purpose of determining coverage.

It’s funny how conservatives can oscillate between federal commands and “States’ rights” in order to reach the results they prefer.
