A few thoughts on the debate

A few random thoughts from the second presidential debate;

  • Sen. John McCain had some effective attacks against Sen. Barack Obama, but I thought Sen. Obama did a better job during this debate of counter-punching.
  • Sen. McCain really needed a game-changing moment in this debate in order to bolster his numbers, and he didn’t get one.
  • My wife said as she listened to Sen. McCain speak, she heard desperation and contempt in his voice. I felt like Sen. McCain was edgy.
  • I liked the line from Sen. Obama about a wheel falling off the Straight Talk Express.
  • To be honest, McCain may have “won” the debate on substance, but Sen. Obama still looked presidential.

  1. I think McCain did major damage to his own campaign when he referred to Obama as “that one there”. It was very condescending to say the least, and I bet more than a few people will feel it was racist.

  2. Yeah, I was going to mention that, because it certainly seemed odd, and my wife said it made McCain seem really contemptuous. Then again, McCain seemed contemptuous throughout the debate.

  3. I’ll probably write on this, but I think McCain was making an allusion to the “One” smear as Obama as some kind of anti-christ. Racism? Not sure. Coded-xenophobia and racism? Maybe. Bonehead – absolutely.

  4. Yeah, MC, I’d definitely agree it was a boneheaded move. I never got the impression McCain meant it to be racist, but I definitely got the “old guy on his lawn waving his slipper in the air” vibe from McCain. You know, the whole, “You crazy kids get off my lawn!” thing.
