Chris Matthews?!? Really?!?!?

It’s been widely speculated that MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews is preparing to run against incumbent Pennsylvania’s Republican Senator, Arlen Specter, in 2010, and I’m left to wonder how much backing Matthews would have from Pennsylvania’s Democrats if he did decide to run against Sen. Specter in 2010. I don’t purport to be an expert on Pennsylvania politics, but I just can’t see Chris Matthews being the best possible candidate Pennsylvania’s Democrats can muster.

  1. I’m sure Pennsylvanians can and will come up with a more suitable candidate than Mr. Matthews. He is NOT really a liberal, and, while very much up on issues and a Philadelphia native, he has consistently been attracted to candidates by their image and personality rather than their stands on issues. He even spoke admiringly of George W. Bush a few years back. While I’m not suggesting ANY candidate must fall into ANY sort of rigid ideological casting, the rationale Matthews sometimes uses to judge other candidates seems a bit superficial and shallow to me. He seems to be swayed by romantic notions, and I think any state would be better served by someone who doesn’t perceive the world quite as Matthews does.

  2. Jack, here’s an excellent blog entry about possible Democratic contenders for the seat currently being held by Sen. Specter. Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz seems to be getting a lot of buzz as the Democratic frontrunner, and a few other names are mentioned as well.
