The perils of Twitter

Sometime yesterday morning, politicos in Virginia became aware of a rumor one of the Democrats in the Virginia State Senate was about to switch parties, a switch that would have given Republicans control of that chamber. Enter Jeff Frederick, the chairman of the Virginia state Republicans, who picked up his smart phone and sent out a tweet:

Big news out of Senate: Apparently one dem is either switching or leaving the dem caucus. Negotiations for power sharing underway.

Needless to say, Virginia Democrats found about about the plot, and they quickly adjourned business, cornered the rogue senator, and browbeat him out of his big plan.

Coincidentally enough, Jeff Frederick isn’t the only Republican that hasn’t figured out that posting news tidbits to Twitter isn’t exactly the best way to keep a secret, as Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan breached security during a Congressional delegation to Iraq by Twittering about his delegation arrival and movements in Iraq.
