What Will Mark Do?

State Rep. Mark Honadel has some interesting decisions coming up.
Real, Actual Legislative Bills are now being authored for the upcoming floor session. One of the 1st is The Labor History Bill.
This bill requires that Labor History actually be taught in our state schools. This bill is expected to pass this session in both houses and be signed into law by Gov. Doyle. Honadel, fresh off a race that was much closer than anyone thought it would be, needs to do some real soul searching on this vote. His District has a history of strong Labor support. In fact in his last election he received PAC money from the following union PACS,  Plumbers Locals 75 and 400, the Steamfitters, Pipe Trades, Sprinkler fitters and Wisconsin truck operators. So will Rep. Honadel actually show the backbone to support this common sense legislation? Hard to say. After all last session he buried the bill in his committee, but He’s gotta know the folks at WEAC are looking at how close his race was last time when very little outside support was given to Glen Brower. Weac took out nutcase Frank Lasee almost by themselves. What could they do in a far more blue collar area? Will Honadel even want to run a tough fight after 2 years in the minority. Remember he’s never been in the minority and i’m told it’s not much fun being irrelevant most of the time! I’ll be watching this early legislation as a signal if Honadel wants to make laws or go back to the Apple Orchards!

  1. So if I am a teacher, I certainly would teach about the history of unions. I would tell of the violence, the destruction of property, the criminal behavior, the racism, the sexism, the dishonesty, the corruption, and of course, the negative economic impacts of unionism. While unions alone did not destroy the auto companies, they certainly played a large part.

But somehow I suspect that the supporters of this legislation are not interested in an impartial, truthful look at that history. If they succeed in this, it will be one more reason for closing down our government indoctrination centers, aka , “public schools.”

Clearly you could use such education. Schools already have many hours of business education offered,
why not require at least some small amount of Labor History and collective Bargaining. Yes i’d expect the Wisconsin students to learn about the struggles to achieve representation, including the Workers @ Kohler Company who
were shot(and killed) While on The picket line!

  2. KVD, you’d also certainly teach about how unions helped end child labor practices, improve worker safety, increase wages for both union and non-union workers, raise the standard of living, and reduce the number of hours in a work week. You’d also certainly teach that while labor unions have a far from perfect history, the same can be said for big business.
