Milwaukee alderman booked into jail, released

Milwaukee Alderman Ashanti Hamilton was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail and released Tuesday night on suspicion of physical abuse of a child. As the Journal Sentinel reported last week, Ald. Hamilton has admitted striking his daughter at his north side home earlier this month because he believed she was misbehaving. Hamilton has denied crossing the line between disciplining his daughter and physically abusing her, and as I write this he has not been formally charged.

In first reporting this story, Dan Bice wrote it was believed that Hamilton hit his daughter with a metal hanger, resulting in a cut and linear red marks on her legs and hands. I’ve never been a believer in parents using physical discipline on their children, and so I don’t proclaim to be an expert on what constitutes appropriate physical discipline, but it seems pretty obvious that striking your child with a metal coat hanger – and giving that child visible red marks as a result – crosses the line between discipline and abuse.
