Local conservative blogger supports bigger government

I’ll have to admit I was more than a little surprised to learn Fred Dooley of the “Real Debate” Wisconsin blog is supporting Pastor David King for Secretary of State in 2010. You’ll remember Pastor King as the opportunist who ran for the State Assembly as a Democrat in a favorable year to Democrats (2008) but is now running for Wisconsin Secretary of State as a Republican in a year that looks to favor Republicans (2010). My surprised stemmed from the fact that Fred Dooley has always struck me as a “small government” kind of conservative, yet he’s supporting a Republican candidate who’s made it clear he wants to increase the size and scope of state government:

Republican David King says Tuesday that like Rice, the Wisconsin secretary of state should go into trouble areas and try to solve problems. King, who runs the nonprofit Milwaukee God Squad, says he wants to use the position to be a mediator and counsel children about drug abuse.

While King’s ambition to use the Secretary of State position to counsel children and act as a mediator
As The Chief points out, it takes money to travel to the “trouble areas” King mentions, and it also takes money to hire speech writers to “counsel children.” What’s more, “mediation” isn’t cheap, and all these new responsibilities would be in addition to the traditional responsibilities of the Secretary of State.

Sounds a lot like bigger government to me, which makes me wonder why Fred Dooley’s falling all over himself with excitement about King’s candidacy.
