Yeah, because comedian Jon Stewart is a true authority on political culture.
Does anyone have any idea what it takes to get that many people (that are not liberals) motivated to gather like that? I know that liberals are often paid to organize and protest (after all, that’s what they are best at doing), but most on the other end of the spectrum or in the middle are hard to get motivated to do much fighting at all.
Again, notice the use of the extreme fringe at these gatherings to illustrate the point that Comedy Central is trying to make? Also notice that it is indeed Comedy Central. Yes, COMEDY Central…except that it is not funny…or original…or entertaining…or innovative.
Citing Jon Liebowitz (his old name before he changed it to Stewart) may appeal to the 15-25 year-old stoner group, but to few others that actually wonder what motivated that many people to show up in DC in the first place.
And Sean Hannity is more qualified? BTW–as you clearly state, Jon’s show is *intentionally* comedy, and doesn’t proclaim itself to be anything else.
Now, now. No need to bash on liberals. No one paid my dad–who had never before protested in his life–to stand on the Main Street bridge of his small town with an anti-Iraq war protest sign. And no one paid the the folks who saw him, pulled over, and joined him. Look, there is no benefit to demonizing the other side of the political fence–let’s be reasonable here.
And by the way, Jon Stewart is friggin’ hilarious. I’m not 15-25, nor a stoner. I’m a mostly liberal Independent who is disgusted with CNN and Fox News. I know what made people show up in DC–the health care proposals are terrible. So, protest that, great! But the other folks (hopefully a minority) who spread hate, fear, and lies…. they can go home. They should be made fun of by Jon Stewart. They should be dissed by Sean Hannity. We should condemn their behavior. Sure, they have a First Amendment right to say whatever they like and protest in whatever peaceful way they like, and they can believe whatever they like, but we have an equal right to call their bullsh*t.
Cari, when did I imply anything about Hannity (that’s right…never…you did). Hannity is a commentator (NOT a journalist) who obviously has made his own views clear (as has Stewart, except that Stewart a.k.a Liebowitz is a comedian that sometimes likes to think that he’s serious…the Jim Cramer interview comes to mind). I get annoyed when people look at Jon (Liebowitz) Stewart or even Dennis Miller (the lone conservative comedian) as founts of wisdom on political matters. Their goal is comedy. Citing a comedian is like citing Wikipedia or a geocities site on a research paper.
I also was not bashing liberals, just stating that most of the organized protesting over the years has generally been done by liberals. They are better at it than the other side because 1) they never give up and 2) there are entire non-profit lefty organizations whose full-time work it is to protest. There’s nothing wrong with it, I’m just pointing out that the liberal end is much better at protesting than conservatives have ever been. To get 50,000-75,000 people in D.C. that tend to lean to the right must have taken something rather drastic to get them motivated. The political right rarely gets off their butts to protest anything! Think about the tax hikes in Wisconsin…hardly a peep from the right. That’s why I am also kind of surprised at how much blowback has been occurring from the right over healthcare, the stimulus, the omnibus, etc.
That’s not demonizing, that’s paying attention to fairly obvious trends. And as per your vignette about your dad: that’s great that he did that on his own. I never implied that every liberal protest provided monetary compensation for protesting, you did that on your own and set up a strawman argument in doing so.
I would also argue that if one side has been demonizing the other as of late, it has been the left demonizing the right as hate, race, and fear mongers. The left controls EVERYTHING and has the votes to ram anything they want through both houses. What are they so ticked off about? They don’t need the votes of the conservatives or Republicans, so why worry about them kicking up a stink?
