Bad news for the WI GOP: Tommy Thompson isn’t running for the U.S. Senate

It’s been rumored former governor Tommy Thompson might be considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Russ Feingold, with Thompson being touted by conservatives as the one Republican in Wisconsin with a reasonable chance of beating Sen. Feingold in the fall. I’ve offered at least twelve reasons why Tommy Thompson would be a terrible candidate for the U.S. Senate, but it’s all a moot point, as it’s pretty obvious Tommy Thompson won’t be running for the U.S. Senate in 2010.

After all, if Tommy Thompson were really considering running for the U.S. Senate this year, would he really join a venture capital fund as an advisor?

Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson was announced as the newest advisor to a Peak Ridge Capital Group venture capital fund.

Thompson, who served as governor for America’s Dairyland for four terms from 1986 through 2002, was known for his push for healthcare reform. Not surprisingly, he was also the secretary of health and human services for President George W. Bush from 2001 until 2005.

Thompson will be relied upon at Peak Ridge for his expertise in agriculture and agribusiness. The firm is currently investing its agricultural technology fund, having announced its first investment from the vehicle.

If Tommy Thompson really were serious about mounting a challenge to Sen. Feingold this year, joining a venture capital fund certainly seems like an odd move, so I think it’s safe to say Tommy Thompson won’t be challenging Sen. Russ Feingold this year.

    1. Yeah, I’d like to think it would, but I think the WI GOP is desperate to find a Senate candidate not named Dave Westlake or Terrence Wall.

  1. Feingold is a great Senator. He is a true Democrat who doesn’t water down his demeanor by trying to come across as a moderate Republican, the way Bayh and Mary Landreu do. The Democrats need to value the true lions of the senate since the passing of Ted Kennedy. Feingold, along with John Kerry, Sherrod Brown, Sen. Harkin and Bernie Sanders have to carry the torch.

  2. He is both a maverick and a true progressive Mr Feingold is!!! At least he knew how to be bi-partisan with campaign finance reform at a time when both parties seemed to want to make elections more about issues and less about buying votes.
