Lady Gaga stands up for equality in the military

I honestly never thought I’d write anything on this blog about Lady Gaga, but her vocal support recently for repealing the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which forces gay and lesbian service members to hide their sexual orientation lest they risk discharge from the military, has brought me to post this. In recent weeks, Lady Gaga has been putting pressure on members of Congress – specifically Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, leading her to post this video on YouTube:

You may remember back in December 2008, then President-elect Obama came under criticism after announcing Pastor Rick Warren, an opponent of gay rights, would deliver the invocation at his inauguration. In defending his decision, Obama said he was a “fierce advocate for gay and lesbian Americans,” but while President Obama has said he’s a fierce advocate for gay and lesbian Americans, Lady Gaga (of all people) has been the fierce advocate President Obama hasn’t been when it comes to the discriminatory practices of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

  1. I got to say, I’ve been loving Lady Gaga politically. A lot of these things are just common sense and there shouldn’t be discrimination for your sexual orientation, period.

But I still think Lady Gaga is a downgrade from Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Her music is catchy though regardless, I can’t lie.

  2. And the masses are supposed to listen to a whacked out performance artist? Yep, she is totally credible. Not!

    1. I really don’t think it matters who is saying something when it has as much common sense as this.

  3. While I don’t know about all the dark details about how this or other things have been rolled into the bill, I applaud her for doing this.

  4. Lady GaGa is far less “whacked out” than say…. Glenn Beck. She’s very conservative, she’s celibate. If Christine O’Donnell were a little less crazy, she and Lady GaGa might even get along. Even so I don’t rule it out – GaGa is quite tolerant of freakishness.

  5. My point is just made. You are all defending a pop star as a spokesperson for policy to be taken seriously. Did she promote this while wearing her meat dress? Come on people, be serious!

    1. So…it’s the costumes she wears while performing that makes you think she more “whacked out” than most people?

    2. I dunno…! But really, I think what she says about the entertainment industry and politics is really interesting.

Besides, isn’t Glenn Beck by all means technically part of the entertainment industry too? I don’t get how people can be serious about him! 😉
