Ron Johnson: lobbyist is “right choice” as his chief of staff

This has to be the understatement of the century (emphasis mine):

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not that familiar with Washington,” Johnson said. “In order to be effective, I needed to put people in the Senate office that were very familiar with Washington. That’s not going to corrupt me in any way, shape or form.”

There’s no denying Don Kent is familiar with Washington D.C., as any long-time lobbyist should be, but it certainly seems curious that a man who is admittedly unfamiliar with Washington (and who campaigned on the idea he’d be a Washington outsider) would choose a long-time lobbyist as the individual who will directly influence how Johnson gets to know his way around Washington. There’s no doubt Don Kent will wield tremendous influence over Ron Johnson, and I’m willing to bet it won’t be long before Ron Johnson has become the very thing he accused Sen. Russ Feingold of being – a Washington insider – but at least in Sen. Feingold’s case he never had a lobbyist telling him what to do.

In related Ron Johnson news, illy T has a hilarious take on Ron Johnson’s committee preferences. Apparently Johnson wouldn’t mind serving on the Senate Appropriations Committee, but not to actually spend any money.
