Yesterday I noted Republican State Rep. Robin Vos’ push to not only disband the southeastern Wisconsin RTA, but to split the RTA’s remaining balance – roughly $1.27 million – equally between Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties.

Facing $7 million in cuts to Milwaukee County’s transit system thanks to the draconian budget proposed by Republican Gov. Scott Walker, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele sent the Joint Finance Committee, which Rep. Vos co-chairs, a letter urging them to split the southeastern Wisconsin RTA’s remaining balance in a manner more reflective of how the money was raised. Abele noted the fact that most of the money raised by the RTA was raised from a rental car tax imposed in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties, and according to a report by Steve Schultze of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, a study has shown that 90% of the money raised by the southeastern Wisconsin RTA came from Milwaukee County:

A study by Enterprise Car Rental on how much of the car rental revenue was generated by the three counties found that 90% of that firm’s rentals were raised in Milwaukee County, 6% in Racine County and 4% in Kenosha County, according to the Southeastern Wiscconsin Regional Planning Commission.

If Rep. Vos’ proposal to equally split the balance of the southeastern Wisconsin RTA’s remaining funds without taking into account which counties were most responsible for raising the funds (Milwaukee County) will amount to nothing more than theft perpetuated by Rep. Robin Vos against the citizens of Milwaukee County.

5 Responses to Robin Vos clearly isn’t interested in fairness for Milwaukee County

which is why I wrote about Robin Vos before…He needs the taxpayers to pay for his membership in ALEC

As I said in the other thread, I’m agreement that the funds should be paid back out in the same proportions they were collected. To do otherwise is simply unfair – whether it’s out of malice or what, I don’t know – but definitely not right.

I do have to ponder whether a study by one rental car company is sufficient justification as to what proportion of the money each county “contributed.” It’s pathetic that the RTA apparently isn’t able to actually provide evidence of the funding sources – yet another example of why many people are against their formation as a largely unaccountable taxing body.

Like the Wisconsin State Legislature spending my MPS property tax dollars outside of the city!

I am sure the tax collected was mostly from Milwaukee County..but I have no problem splitting it three ways. The people of Milwaukee were more than happy to turn over a huge pile of cash to an unelected board, the Lefties were more than happy to allow for a 6-10 million dollar per year loss for this KRM boondoggle. So consider this not a loss of $$$ but a huge savings thanks to the people of Racine for electing the people who saved Milwaukee and Kenosha from itself. In fact the true believers who willing to lose millions per year should give it all to RACINE. Your welcome!!

Ah, so you’re one of those people who thinks roads don’t “operate” at a “loss” to taxpayers.

Unicorns just sprinkle libertarian magic dust to make roads appear in your universe, eh? Must be nice.

But thankfully us lefties have big government geniuses like you willing to elect people that will save us from our idiot selv…hey…wait a minute!
