Meet Shery Lanford Smith (pictured, right). In case you don’t know who she is, Shery Lanford Smith is the chairwoman of the Sumter (South Carolina) Tea Party.

On August 11, Smith decided to post a joke about President Barack Obama and First Lady Michele Obama on the wall of her Facebook profile page. In the joke, the Obamas’ helicopter pilot says to his co-pilot, “I could throw both of them out of the window and make 256 million people very happy!” Smith also posted on her Facebook wall, “If you’re one of [the] 256 million, pass it on,” implying she counted herself among the 256 million Americans who would be happy to see the Obamas killed. While Smith has since locked down her Facebook page, a reporter did capture an image of the joke as posted by Shery Lanford Smith on Facebook (click for a full-size image):

I get that there’s a lot of folks out there who hold political beliefs that are diametrically opposed to those held by President Obama, but joking about killing the President should be the type of rhetoric that’s off limits.

Then again, conservatives have been wishing death on President Obama since shortly after he was elected in 2008, as evidenced by this comment (#12) from conservative blogger Peter DiGaudio of Racine:

For shame.

  1. 4Q Shery Lanford Smith.. You and your family better prey that nothing happens to the Obama’s. That bitch and her family may very well be the first revenge targets.

  2. She needs to wake and smell the real air for a change. Majority of the people she is referring to will vote for Obama and not be classified as a member of the tea nut racist party. By the way, she should NOT get away from threatening the first family like that.
