South Woods in Cudahy to close

Last week Carol Deptolla of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the South Woods supper club in Cudahy is closing its doors as of October 28. According to Deptolla’s report, South Woods owner Larry Burss cited rising food costs for beef and seafood, as well as the expense of making the lower-level banquet room fully accessible for customers with disabilities, as reasons for the closure. Though South Woods is closing, Burss will continue in the restaurant business, as he’ll be managing banquets at Joe’s K Ranch in Cudahy.

Though only dined at South Woods a few times, I found their steaks to be delicious, and the restaurant’s closing will be a real loss for Cudahy. I’ve not heard any speculation on whether a new restaurant will take the place of South Woods, but I certainly hope to see something replace South Woods, because given its difficulties drawing businesses to the city, Cudahy can ill afford to lose another business.

  1. Never made it there, but I’ll miss his obvious south Milwaukee accent that you heard on his radio commercials.

  2. Would travel there for the delicious food and the wonderful location…Beautiful this time of year.

  3. My wife and I have lived in Oak Creek since 2003, I moving from NYC and she from Chicago, to experience the quiet life that is Wisconsin. We had visited South Woods and several occasions and have enjoyed the food very much. It was a shame to hear they had closed although I did not find out until I saw the For Sale sign on the property. We will miss that place dearly.
