George Zimmerman found not guilty of gunning down Trayvon Martin

This is absolute crap.

George Zimmerman is not guilty of murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, a Florida jury decided late Saturday.

The fact that Zimmerman fired the bullet that killed Martin was never in question, but the verdict means the six-person jury had reasonable doubt that the shooting amounted to a criminal act.

This tweet sums up how I feel about the verdict acquitting George Zimmerman.

I wish I could say I was surprised by the verdict in this case, but I wasn’t, and this verdict shows that we as a society have a long way to go.

  1. I understand the emotion of the case, but since you call it “absolute crap” what evidence presented in the case in regard to the legal sense of guilt the jury was bound by (fearing bodily harm or death at the moment of self-defense), makes you feel that the verdict should be different?

Based on what I saw, do I think he was guilty within those parameters? No. Do I think he was innocent? Not entirely. But you can’t just make up a verdict based on emotions. However, I am not a juror and my emotions of sympathy go out to the death of a 17 yr old kid and his family.

  2. @NAACP: Zimmerman acquitted on all charges. We will update you as we work to pursue civil rights charges against Zimmerman through the DOJ

  3. Don’t forget that OJ was also found “not guilty of murder, but lost big time in a civil suit for “damages.”

    1. Yeah, I expect we’ll see a civil suit, and since the burden of proof is lower in a civil suit, the Martins may get some measure of justice there.

      1. I honestly feel like civil suits based on criminal action constitutes “double jeopardy” in our system and should be considered unconstitutional. Lawyers, who make their money suing people, disagree with me obviously, but I think it is wrong. Of course I think being able to defend your client by overtly appealing to racism is pretty morally indefensible as well. Regardless, a civil suit is not “justice”. It places a cash value on a human life, it makes it a commodity. What happens if they win a civil suit but get a much lower judgment for Trayvon then was received for Nicole Brown Simpson? Does that mean our legal system has determined that a 17 year old black man has less cash value that a 35 year old white woman the same way they would with cars of different makes and models? It sort of disgusts me.

        1. In the case of OJ’s civil suit, they had his supposedly deep pockets (did he ever pay much?). What do you think they will be able to recover from Zimmerman, considering he probably wasn’t worth too much and won’t be now. I don’t know what he did for a living. So if he’s not rich, what is the point of a civil suit — in case he ever writes a book or something?
