Thursday Music: “Royals”

I’m digging this right now.

Here’s more on why I dig Lorde, from an interview she gave Radio New Zealand.

“A song came out recently by a big pop star (Selena) and the lyrical thing is “when you’re ready come and get it, I’ll be sitting right here just waiting” and I just find that so pathetic and I don’t think girls should be listening to that kind of thing and I don’t think that is normal or healthy.”

  1. Good on ya, Lorde! Pretty cool to see a 16 year old articulating a critique on mass media and how women are portrayed in current pop culture/pop music. Thanks for the additional info, Zach. The ensuing pettiness expressed therein is troubling, but not unexpected given the troubling state of American “culture” at the moment combined with the migration of that “culture” abroad.

  2. Nice post. Should be interesting to watch her career grow – especially if she doesn’t get sucked into writing vapid, boring songs about desire. Look for anyone who questions consumerism to get smeared. In this case a blogger did the smearing but the corporatist media is all over it.
