St. Joseph the Worker Society debuts

From my email inbox comes news of a new organization inspired by Pope Francis and focusing on translating news of the day through the lens of Catholic social justice teachings.

MILWAUKEE-A new group inspired by Pope Francis and named for the Catholic patron saint of workers debuted last week, with an email blast and a social media presence.

The St. Joseph the Worker Society, a nonprofit originating out of All Saints Catholic Church on Milwaukee’s North Side, will translate news of the day through the rich tradition of Catholic social justice teachings.

“Pope Francis has called us to action to work for the poor in our midst and to ensure that trickle-down economics do not exclude workers, the elderly, the sick and the immigrants in our midst from participation,” said Fr. Carl Diedrichs, pastor at All Saints.

“Our new society will not hesitate to speak out against those who would harm these our least fortunate brothers and sisters.”

The Society is online at stjoetheworker.org, on Twitter at https://twitter.com/StJoeWorker and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/St-Joseph-the-Worker-Society/

  1. Somebody needs to tell Pope Francis that we need to open the damn to allow a bountiful waterfall instead of the current “trickle.” It would be much better for the economy et al., not to mention the salmon.

    1. No kidding. Trickle-down is a well-documented failure everywhere in the world it’s employed. With that said, I think the Pope has spoken against it so is this particular priest just framing the issue to make what he’s doing more palatable to the toxic SE WI political landscape? Or perhaps this is just another meaningless church gesture? Hopefully the former. It sounds like a good idea.

  2. Hallelujah, we have another Father Groppi! His name: Father Carl Diedrichs

So Father Carl is taking Pope Francis seriously long before Pope Francis was able to get serious with “The Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium)” Too many of our Catholic pastors and bishops have joined with the secular/political Wisconsin Right to Life in recognizing abortion as being the only or most important issue of the day and strongly suggesting to vote only for the pro-choice Republican candidates.

It appears Father Carl is only interested in people, not politics.

  3. Correction: “pro-choice Republican” should read pro-life Republican.” Is there any other kind?

FYI: Father Groppi was a civil rights activist in Milwaukee during 1960’s.
