Justin Moralez: “Those on the road simply want [potholes] fixed” (VIDEO)

During a recent interview with Steve Walters of WisconsinEye, Cudahy Alderman (and current State Assembly candidate) Justin Moralez was asked a question about the gap in the state’s transportation fund for road reparis. In response to Walters’ question, Moralez explained that “Those on the road simply want them fixed – they want those nasty potholes fixed.”

Sounds like a pretty unambiguous statement, and it certainly piqued my curiosity, given the state of Cudahy’s roads – including those in the aldermanic district represented by Justin Moralez. Here’s a video highlighting Justin Moralez’s record on potholes.

Now this may seem like a small issue, but I’ve long believed that elected officials should be accountable for what they say and do while in office. While Justin Moralez may recognize that folks who drive on roads simply want those roads to be free from nasty potholes, recognition without results simply isn’t sufficient.

  1. What this article conveniently fails to mention is that we (Cudahy) have been pushing for massive improvements in our infrastructure, much of which has been neglected for decades.

Work was scheduled to start this summer, but after a terrible winter and qualified contractors tied up on other jobs, the projects had to be delayed.

Here is a portion of a recent press release from Mayor Hohenfeldt, featuring the city’s plan to address road repairs, including substantial work in the 1st District.

Contract Work Planned for Cudahy Streets

The first project will be the reconstruction of Packard Avenue from Holmes to Cudahy Avenues. The project was already bid and awarded by the Cudahy Common Council on June 24, 2014.

Construction on Packard Avenue will include the replacement of the pavement, sidewalk, and street lights, modifications to the signal lights, the addition of a bike land and construction of bio filtration for storm water. The majority of the funding will be paid through local dollars however, staff has secured a small amount of funding through the State Local Road Improvement program and a Storm Water Grant from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.

Additional road improvement, sanitary sewer and storm water improvements projects were identified within the municipal borrow of 2014 with work on those projects to begin in 2015 through 2017. Roadway reconstruction projects include Cudahy Avenue reconstruction from Swift to Lake Drive, Barland Avenue pavement, Kirkwood Avenue reconstruction from Grange to Morris, defective sidewalk replacements, and Packard Avenue reconstruction from Cudahy to Lunham Avenue.

Sanitary sewer and water main improvement projects include lateral and main replacements on Lake Drive from Allerton to Cudahy Avenues, Cudahy Avenue from Lake Drive to Swift, Packard Avenue from Cudahy to Lunham Avenues. Additional storm water improvement projects to reduce flood prone areas have also been funded.

    1. Justin, I didn’t conveniently forget to mention anything.

You made a comment about potholes, and I simply pointed out that there are plenty of potholes in your district that could use fixing. You say infrastructure has been neglected in Cudahy for years, and while no one would argue that point, tearing roads down to grade and rebuilding them is different than simply filling potholes as a temporary fix.

Getting potholes filled should be an easy thing for an alderman to do, and that was the point of this entry.

  2. I get that there are plans “in the works”, but can we at least fill some of those front-end damaging potholes with some gravel or something in the meantime? I drive on a lot of those streets on an almost daily basis and I have to say a small prayer as I approach so that my car doesn’t fall apart on me.
